Peninsula Community Theatre

The Village Theatre opened in 1935 in Hilton Village. It was done in Art Deco style. It closed as a movie theatre in the early-1990’s. In 1994 it became the Peninsula Community Theatre for the Performing Arts. It still maintains its original marquee.

This theater was the center piece of a planned community,Hilton Village, primarily ship yard workers.Get off the freeway when in Tidewater and visit this scenic area. The once thriving business district still has some interesting shops.

While I know I’ve likely seen more than a couple movies here, I remember seeing Star Wars here with some friends.

I was clueless, along for the fun of it, with a friend’s parents driving us. So I just walked into the Village not knowing what was playing or that it was this big blockbuster movie. Cool surprise …

Very nicely designed theatre. The theatre was closed on the day I was in town so the only part of the interior I could see was what was visible from the front door. The lobby is small with what appears to be the original concession stand still in place. Exterior photos from February 2011:

Several articles and reader letters about the Village Theatre and its operators, the Gordon family, were published in the local newspaper over the years, and its web site,, has an assortment of them conveniently linked on this web page.

I love to pass by this theater. I never went there since I lived across the river in Suffolk but I love the design and the fact they have kept it up in appearance.
