News About This Theater
Located just off Route 80 in Stroudsburg, this theater is known for bringing kids shopping at the Stroud Mall to the movies with cheap fare. Been there a few times while living in Blairstown. Only one auditorium is equipped with DTS sound and excellent picture. Not as good as the bigger AMC theaters, but a nice one.
The Loews Stroud Mall 5 was opened in 1978. In the 1980’s two more screens were added and it was renamed Stroud Mall Cinema 1-7 and later Loews Stroud Mall 7. In 1994 it was taken over by Sony Theatres, but retained the Loews signage. In 1996 it reverted back to Loews. The AMC Loews Stroud Mall 7 was closed on December 12, 2010. It was replaced by Cinemark Stroud Mall 12, which opened on November 4, 2011.

I can’t believe this theater is still open while other theaters offer better projection, prices, surround sound, and 3D. This is as old-school as mall movie theaters gets.

This theater closed on December 12, 2010. It will be replaced by a new twelve-screen Cinemark multiplex with an opening anticipated around Thanksgiving, 2011. There is a story here (registration may be required): View link
I’m glad that Cinemark is building a state-of-the art theater with all the bells and whistles of other recent theaters, including Rockaway.

The grand opening of this theater’s successor will be November 4, although the big movie that will come out, Tower Heist, won’t be due to Universal and its parent company, Comcast doing the premium VOD service three weeks after the films comes out. This will be a big disappoinment for fans of Ben Stiller living in the Poconos who want to see a big budget comedy action film in CInemark XD.
an update on the tower heist situation….looks like universal has canceled its VOD plans for tower heist, therefore this movie will go on as planned at the new theater.
Barely remember what this theater was like. My Grandparents moved to South Sterling when I was really young, so I spent a lot of summers and breaks up there. Not a ton to do in the area, so we’d make the periodic trips to Stroudsburg for the mall or other places. I think the first movie I saw there was Red Dawn (which I was probably too young to see)…
Throughout 1977 and 1978, the Stroud Mall slowly opened many stores such as J.C. Penney, Stewarts, and Hess’s. However, around that same time, a movie theater was planned inside the Strouds Mall in August 1977. It did and the theater was built inside the mall shortly after the mall opened its first stores.
The Stroud Mall Cinema 1-5 opened in 1978 with five screens and was first managed by Pat Boyle. Two more screens were added in the 1980s bringing a total to 7 screens and was renamed the “Stroud Mall Cinema 1-7” and later “Loews Stroud Mall 7” after being taken over by Loews. I cannot find who first operated the Stroud Mall Cinema before its Loews takeover.
In 1994, the theater became a Sony theater and was renamed “Sony Stroud Mall 7” but retained its Loews signages. The theater went back to Loews in 1996 and rechanged its name back to “Loews Stroud Mall 7” and remained as a Loews theater until its bankruptcy in 2006.
