This would be such a shame. In a city that has the perception as caring so little about its historic past and lack of preservation of historic buildings, this would just further that perception.
I had heard that Hollywood was working on or talks of working on filming The Secret of Isis. Does anyone remember her? She was my first female superhero (before Wonder Woman). Albeit I love to watch “socially conscious” movies sometimes I just want to be entertained even if it is a cheesy movies, dare I say, I enjoy a cheesy movie or two. Ooooh! I would welcome a cheesy movie about about the Wonder Twins. Wonder Twin Powers………..
One of the local filmakers for Celia- The Queen, Joe Cardona is or was an English teacher at MDCC. I was a student of his one semester at MDDC. He was very passionate about Cuban History, as I recall.
I suppose then that the films made of recent are contenders for a future Recession Era Festival movies – Frost/Nixon, Che, Slumdog Millionaire etc etc etc. I would like to see a movie about the current banking industry’s woes…would that be a comedy or action? lol
The movie industry’s incentive is to make money, as in any other business. This is capitalism-supply and demand. Sci Fi even if it is crappy makes money. bottom line. I don’t mean to oversimplify things. Albeit, we may not like what is out and cherish the Sci Fi movies of our perspective generaton, Gen Y just might. In fact, they may like the “mindless CGI” stuff. What is wrong with that? It is entertainment! Today’s Sci Fi movies are movies are memories of their youth. We have matured and see things differently now. We have higher expectations maybe. Lastly, our parents probably didn’t like our Sci Fi movie choices either. I know my parents didn’t. I loved cheesy Flash Gordon. Hey, this is America, “What a country”. lol
I am your age LMHG and I agree with your commentary. Have a child of my own (older than yours).I can appreciate what you mean about having their own legends. Right now I am hoping Will Smith will still around and I think he has is a contender as a legend, as well as Ashley Judd, Jake Gylenthal,Ryan Gosselin, Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix. I have faith more legends will emerge. I am also somewhat concerned that there won’t be great directors. My first Paul Newman movie was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, thanks to dad. I think I saw it in a theatre. Saw a few others like Color of Money. He was one of the greats and will be truly missed. RIP Mr Newman

He was referenced on this posting (Black Christmas). Christmas Story is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this years. I saw a house this week that had the famous “major award” lamp. Just found out about the house that it was filmed in is now a tourist attraction in Ohio!
Most GenXer’s will always hold Grease near and dear to our heart. I think if Happy Days would have done a movie like this,it would have been just as popular, given the right characters, songs etc for the Baby Boomers.
I heard a rumor when I was a kid that the Village Theatre was haunted. No joke. The only time I ever saw a movie there was when my mom took my abuela and I to see Julio Iglesias movie there. I remember Alvarez Guedes opened up (live) and did a stand up. My grandomother was shocked as my mom was due to the strong language content. I thought that he was funny. But it was funnier to see my abuela’s expressions. You remember that showing?
I remember once seeing a sign when I was a little girl and asking my brother about it and he laughed but never explained what was funny. I had asked him who is “Emmanuelle” and if that was another Kung Fu artist like Bruce Lee. Funny enough we had a neighbor named Emmanuelle (a guy). My brothers used to watch Bruce Lee movies there in the 70’s so you are right they played action movies, of all types, apparently, lol. It is now a church or something like that.
I remember vaguely seeing a little of bit of Crazy Larry and Dirty Mary I think it was called. My dad would bring his cooler and snacks. He woould park by the playground so we kids could play while him and mom would watch the movies. My brothers would sit on top of car (since they were the older ones). We had fun.

I checked out A Guy Named Joe. I loved it. The movie pests bit was funny. Amazing how the pests are stil alive and well today.
