I am hopeful that the Humber can get the big downstairs theatre going with good equipment. This place has so much potential if done right.

vic1964 commented about Michael Moore fighting to save State Theatre on Nov 17, 2011 at 11:56 am

Michael Moore has put up a ton of money and time for this and many other theaters and causes. Michael has made many suits behind the scenes rich but he does not get all the money his films make.

YES!!! This is great news!

vic1964 commented about Humber Cinema on Sep 26, 2011 at 12:37 pm

I hope this theater can ultimately be a success because it’s near identical to the Odeon I lost in 1988 in London Ontario.

I heard the Humber has just closed again suddenly!? Very upsetting!

vic1964 commented about Empire Capitol 7 on Sep 12, 2011 at 1:33 pm

The front facade looks like London Ontario Capitol which was a C Howard Crane theatre built by the Allen chain.

It was a great theater which in the 1970s showed first run Hollywood films.

these chains use will also fall into dis repair because this business model that all the corporate suits are cashing in on is flawed! I believe a crash of this digital 3d model is coming and multiplexes are doomed!

vic1964 commented about Pressure to go digital stresses small town theaters such as the Ganado Cinema on Feb 28, 2011 at 11:20 am

It is far cheaper to fix the 35mm equipment and train people to run it properly! This is something that should have been done all along anyway!
This rush to overpriced digital is being pushed by studio suits who don’t care about the future of cinema but only savings on print costs and 3d upcharges! The big chains see digital conversion as a way to eliminate the small competition and don’t care about the quality of movies either or they would have kept 35mm standards up over the years instead of sinking it into the mud!
Oh look our new digital projection out performs our old mud machines!Whatever projectors

Here is a new and topical letter to the Editor!
Detroit got it right
Regarding Em touts Chrysler in Super Bowl ad (,Feb. 7), Eminem doesn’t just park outside “a theatre” displaying the message “Keep Detroit Beautiful.” That theatre is the Fox.

The Fox is a cousin to London’s Capitol Theatre, demolished to make way for a parking lot. Both theatres were designed by the renown theatre architect C. Howard Crane.

There is something very telling in the fact that Detroit, known for urban decay, a declining population and a shrinking tax base, was able to save the Fox and its magnificent hall while London lost the Capitol, except for a bit of the facade. We don’t even have the marquee left to post the message “Keep London Beautiful.”

I showed it using a blu-ray i ordered from France!
The picture is great and sound is 5.1 but it just sounds so so.

vic1964 commented about 3-D boom going bust? on Aug 4, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Problem is the collective forces are using 3d to push for a complete digital transition! They want 35mm to disappear from theaters forever!
Side by side harmony with film coexisting with digital is not part of the plan and this makes me crazy as do silver screens!
It would be different if digital was vastly better but i find it to be only a little better than film done wrong and junk compared to film done right!

vic1964 commented about 3-D boom going bust? on Aug 4, 2010 at 10:36 am

I like the blog and pretty much agree on Avatar.I ran Avatar in 35mm for a couple weeks and compared the 3d real d with the 35mm.
My conclusion was that the 3d was very cool and effective but the 35mm blew it away if you still cared about picture quality! The color, contrast and clarity was stunning for a digital transfer to film!
In 3d you get this cool 3d effect that is better than expected but you lose everything else! The masses would not know what they missed in 35mm because they drank the 3d kool aid but i think it’s wearing off a bit and maybe with directors like Chris Nolan film can hang a while!

vic1964 commented about Hyland Cinema on Jul 4, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Back To The Future opened here 25 years ago and played for 12 weeks!
I have been the projectionist here for 5 years since we reopened in 2005!
The theatre sat in limbo for 16 years!
We are booking Back To The Future for a future engagement in 35mm of course!

vic1964 commented about Odeon Hyland on Jul 4, 2010 at 12:47 pm

The sister theatre to the Odeon Hyland was in London Ontario called the Odeon and later Odeon 1&2 when the balcony was made into theatre #2.It was demolished to build a pathetic downtown mall in 1988ish!
I saw Amadeus at the Hyland in 70mm!
Back To The Future played here in 70mm 25 years ago today!

vic1964 commented about Consolidated Theaters launching Titan XC big screen experiences on Jun 4, 2010 at 10:34 am

Funny how they will throw so much money at this digital junk but nothing for the 70mm cause or skilled projectionists who could make 35mm shine!?

vic1964 commented about Enjoy 'Iron Man 2' on May 7 by avoiding "Fake IMAX" on May 4, 2010 at 8:49 am

It depends on the print quality and make of projectors! The lenses also come into it and how good the techs are who maintain alignment!
Filmgaurd cleaners eliminate the dust problem.

If the will existed to have 35mm projection be perfect then it would be no contest but because the industry wants to eliminate all these variables and go digital at GREAT $cost,it is easy to make DLP appear better than film done wrong.
Film can be far better than most have seen it but everything works against that happening so shoot me now!

vic1964 commented about A Guide to seeing "Avatar" in several formats on Jan 5, 2010 at 10:49 am

The 35mm prints are fantastic!Even James Cameron thinks it’s the best any of his films have looked on film.
It is being overlooked because of the 3D but it truly does look great in 35mm! You can see fine details and color missing from dark resolution starved 2k digital 3D presentations.

I love the 3D in Avatar but i did not drink the cool aide so i wish the 35mm would get more respect!

This LA writer says to pass on one of the best looking 35mm films ever!

vic1964 commented about Will movies at home kill movie theaters? on Nov 24, 2009 at 8:44 am

I hope for less screens but better quality screens in the future.
In other words give me a time machine! lol.
Lenses are far better today but much of this is offset by short steep downward angle throws. We may have better film stocks but they high speed print them to death! Long throws with carbon arc worked wonders with those old lenses plus prints were made with more care as we had less of them.

vic1964 commented about DVD downturn panics film industry on Jun 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm

I don’t buy DVD’s anymore because i only want Blu-ray but most of the titles i want are yet to be released.
I am also very much over the idea of owning everything on Blu-ray if i have the DVD, just want my favorites movies only.

If the prices came way down on Blu-ray i would buy more but not like the DVD glory days where i had to have everything.

vic1964 commented about Hollywood actor boycotts IMAX version of Star Trek at AMC on May 29, 2009 at 10:45 am

Digital cannot handle it!
Up until The Dark Knight ,no feature film director would dare try to shoot in IMAX.
Chris Nolan didn’t complain about the difficulties involved with shooting in IMAX.
He just did it! Guess what? It turned out fantastic and made boatloads of deserved money.
The new IMAX digital plan is a scam!
