Yes, if you look at the opening ad, it says Southdown Rd. The map shows the location of South Common Mall which also had a Cineplex theatre at one time.
By the time the St Clair theatre closed, it was a twin. The balcony was one cinema and the orchestra level was another. The one screen showed Italian movies and the other English. I saw a James Bond double bill there before it closed, “Live and Let Die” and “The Man with the Golden Gun” in the late 70’s.
I’m wondering if Cineplex Entertainment is slowly phasing out the SilverCity brand, I noticed on their web site that this location is now called Cineplex Cinemas Yorkdale (formerly SilverCity Yorkdale). Same with the former SilverCity Oakville & VIP, now called Cineplex Cinemas Oakville & VIP
Thanks Jason. Sounds interesting. I will have to try and get there soon. So between the 5 VIP there and the 4 at the Varsity, they have 9 VIP screens downtown. And coming soon, the 3 VIP screens uptown at the Yonge & Eglinton location.
Where are the VIP cinemas? Do they have a separate entrance or the same wide open walk in. Are they clustered together on the main floor? I know they used one of the former cinemas for the lounge. Will have to try to get there one of these days.
Loved these theatres, saw many movies there in the 70s including “Blazing Saddles” and laughed all the way home. Every theatre operator since has all but abandoned any theatre south of the QEW in Burlington, Oakville and Mississauga which is a shame.
The ironic thing is that the location that Shoppers is moving from down the street was the former Esquire theatre, but there is no resemblance to what it once was.
Interesting. I DO wish Landmark would expand inside the city, like you said, we need the competition. I always regret that once Cineplex took over Famous Players, there went the 10 screen complex at 1 Bloor East to replace the Uptown. That would have been a nice addition to the Yonge-Bloor area.
Have you heard of any new development in that area? With Cineplex already having the Coliseum (now Cineplex Cinemas), Morningside and Eglinton Town Centre in Scarborough, I doubt if they’d want to open any more. Scarborough seems pretty well covered it seems.

At Eaton Centre, Nordstrom. The one in downtown Vancouver is also to be a Nordstrom. Not sure what the Yorkdale one is becoming because Nordstrom there is in a new addition presently under construction.
The cinemas were in a different building across the street from the mall. The former cinemas became and still are a Home Outfitters, a Sears Home store and a Homesense. The Sears department store was in Sherway Gardens mall, across The Queensway from where the theatres were. The former Sears department store is becoming a Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom is going where the present Sporting Life store is. Even if the three stores vacated where the former theatre was, I doubt it would ever become a theatre again, unless Landmark wanted to build there. Cineplex obviously wouldn’t since they left as soon as they opened the Queensway cinemas down the street.
And that’s why it’s weird that they have not replaced either of these 80s cinemas with something more modern. And doesn’t seem to be any plans in sight either, haven’t seen any announcements from Cineplex or Landmark. It really IS too bad there isn’t more competition in Canada anymore.
Too bad eh. Think of all the movies they could have shown by now. Our own Westwood here in TO sat empty from 1998 until last year when they finally tore it down. Rainbow could have shown movies there all these years. Going back to Vancouver, I remember when West Van had the Odeon and Park Royal and North Van had none after the Odeon Totem closed down. Now it’s been North Van that’s had the movie theatres all these years. I just think it’s odd that Cineplex or Landmark haven’t replaced either one with a multiplex and VIP would certainly fit in with the moneyed population of that area.
The Park theatre is STILL open. It’s a Cineplex cinema now…the Dunbar is still operational as well.

This has now re-opened as CineStarz Burlington. This is the fifth CineStarz in the chain.

Apparently undergoing some sort of renovations according to the Cineplex website although remaining open during renos.
