I stumbled across a beautiful original neon PARAMOUNT sign at an antique shop in Lynn MA recently (on display only..not for sale)…thinking that it may have come from the Paramount in Lynn MA, I was informed by the proprietor that it came from Paramount in Vermont..Brattleboro he thought. If ‘add-a-photo" ever comes back to this site, i’ll take a pic and post it..
If you are from the area, follow route c-1 away from the revere theater complex toward Lynn…near the Marsh rotary is an ambulance business called REVERE and they use as their sign one of the original metal-with-neon 50’s/60’s styled “REVERE” signs that they must have obtained when the drive-in closed..someday when we get pictures on this site I’ll post it
I live in Rowley MA and would welcome a new theater in nearby Newburtport! The Newburyport Screening Room does a great job right now! Currently we all all waiting for a theater that is scheduled to open soon in nearby Ipswich MA in the old town hall.
Also, there is an interesting theater that is open sporatically in Rockport MA called the Little Arts Theater..it is a gem, and might be available for purchase!!
For now I will continue to drive my family crazy with my 16mm sound Bell & Howell and eclectic collection of features and odd feature reels! Film RULES!!
The “Guiness” comment is not accurate. I attendede the Lynn Open Air Theater many times, and it was average Drive-In size..actually smaller than the nearby Revere Drive In. Also it closed in the late sixties or yery early 70’s..
Ipswich MA had a great theater..The Strand..it used to show first run movies..it was torn down in the early eighties…for some reason it is not in the “cinema treasures” database, but I can recall going to it in the 60’s to see first run features instaed of travelling to Boston
As time has passed, population and median income have increased significantly in this general area (Ipswich/Rowley/Hamilton)..Ipswich has revitalized it’s downtown recently, with plans for more improvement..here’s where you come in…
Ipswich is about to sell it’s old Town Hall to a party that intends to turn it into a cinema or cinema pub, for around $350K…I don’t think it’s a done deal yet..maybe your people should investigate…Google “Ipswich Chronicle” and you will eventually find info on the situation!
What a GREAT PLACE…I SAW KEVIN SPACEY PERFORM HERE RECENTLY WITH HIS BOBBY DARIN MUSIC TOUR!!!! NOT A BAD SEAT IN THE HOUSE>>GREAT ACOUSTICS ALSO!! email me if you would like pix of the event!
Damien…I stand corrected for now…note that I gleamed
that “inaccurate by your reckoning” info from one of the current Darin bio books, and I have no way to verify either point of info on this issue…from the “Sunshine Cinema” website comes this:
“Opened December 21, 2001. Built in 1898, the Sunshine Cinema building was formerly the Houston Hippodrome motion picture theatre and a Yiddish vaudeville house but for over 50 years it had been shuttered serving as a hardware warehouse."
..maybe Mr.Evanier got the name wrong, this info seems to imply that it was a Yiddish theater (Name?) THEN the Hippodrome movie theater..PS neither I nor Mr. Evanier imply that Darin attended any of these venues…just that they were nearby his residence…Jim P
…Bobby Darin lived at 50 Baruch Place as a child, not far from the Sunshine Cinema (..it was then the Yiddish National, a vaudeville theater, according to David Evanier in his current Darin biography…). Anyway, this would be the perfect venue for Kevin Spacey’s Bobby Darin biopic BEYOND THE SEA to premiere…it’s scheduled to open in NYC and LA late December 2004, and I am not aware that an NYC theater has been slected yet..any movers/shakers out there???
