Just uploaded a few more photos mostly from our town’s museum. Thanks to Judy Pate for supplying me with them. There’s also a very cool “Night” shot from just after one of our “Movies On Main” showing last week.

The Movies On Main program is back for the summer of 2011. This year sponsored by the City of Flatonia, with each movie being sponsored by a movie loving donor. If you are in the area on friday night at sundown, feel free to stop by and enjoy a great movie under the stars. Check out the current showings on the Lyric Theater’s facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lyric-Theater/274919382438

Feel free to “LIKE” us there!

The two photos dated 1950 are NOT the Austin Theater. The first is the State Theater, its currently owned by The Paramount & State Theater Company http://www.austintheatre.org The Walgreens next door to the State Theater moved to a less costly location, but the building is still there on the corner.

The second photo is the Texas Theater in Palestine TX, not Austin.

The Austin Theater located at 2130 S Congress Ave, Austin Texas is currently owned according to tax records by Austin Music Partners LLC.

August 21, 2009, marks the end of the Lyric’s second successful “Movies On Main” program. This is an outdoor series of films shown in the empty lot next door, onto a screen painted on side of the Lyric.

Hopefully this fall when it gets just a little cooler the clean up / out of the Lyric can start. This will allow interior renovations to begin, and its going to take a lot.

So its ok, for a “few” people to not pay the fees associated with showing these “old movies” while the rest of us who legally show the same “old movies” pay the fees.
So these same exhibitors could just as well take some “old money” out of our wallets as well? Instead of breaking the laws we don’t want to abide by, how about we just get rid of the laws and even up the playing field?

I currently don’t show new releases, I pay the public display fees for older movies for my summer movie program, which I don’t charge for, but I still play by the rules and pay the fee.

Shouldn’t this article read “a group of dedicated copyright pirates” instead? As a legal movie exhibitor, I pay my fees to Swank Motion Pictures for my public display each and every time I show a movie outdoors even to a small group of folks. Bringing back the old tradition of outdoor movies in Flatonia, it costs a lot to put on the summer shows, the pay back for me personally is the smiles on the people’s faces when they head home. If everyone would pay their share of the public display fees, then it wouldn’t cost so much for the rest of us who put on these shows legally. After all what are we teaching our kids, is ok to do this, so long as you don’t get caught?

To all the wonderful photographers, please feel free to stop next door at the cabinet shop and say “HOWDY” I’d be happy to give you an inside tour of the Lyric.

I am the current owner and starting in June, along with the Chamber of Commerce we will be bringing an old tradition back by showing outdoor movies from June through August. June will be John Wayne month featuring 4 of his films — The Cowboys (June 5th) , The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (June 12th) , The Sons of Katie Elder ( June 19th) and finally True Grit (June 26th). These are free movies shown outdoors in the empty lot next door.

Ken right now its just the DVD, unfortunately I don’t have a “Real” reel projector, I believe they were removed, sometime in the 70’s and the projection booth was demolished along with the balcony by a previous owner. So for this summer season, we’ll get by with an LCD projector and a DVD player, but do look forward to the day when 35mm films can again be shown here.

Look for more recent and some really old photos of the Lyric on MySpace, since we can’t upload new photos here, I created a page on MySpace temporarily. View link If this link doesn’t work , just search for LyricTheater and you should be able to locate us, until I can get a proper website up and running for it.

Good news, the marquee is about to get repaired, including new transformers and its letter “C” replaced, this should get done in time for the Annual Czhilispiel on Oct 26th, 27th, and 28th 2007.

Good news for this one, I just completed the purchase and now doing the research before starting the renovation. Unfortunately the previous attempt was dreadful, so a lot of tear-out before anything can get started.

Also the entire community appears to be behind getting this project off the ground and completed this time. So wish me luck and feel free to send along any advice.
