There’s now a historical marker (details) in front of the address where the Avon was located. The marker says that the site was the home of the Bruce Opera House from 1888 to 1909, when it burned down. The Bruce not only had live entertainment but also showed movies, and is claimed to be the first theater to show them with a Biograph. The historical marker says the projector was invented in Canastota but that doesn’t appear to be accurate (although the co-inventor Herman Casler was from there).

The State Theatre was vacant and for lease when I visited in March 2023. In February 2024 the State Theatre Vintage Emporium opened in the building.

The Pitt Theatre’s website has changed to http://www.pitttheater.com/. The theater itself now has two screens, both showing movies at 7:30 p.m., and only 7:30 p.m., seven days a week.

The Marigold Theater, a bar and dance hall that features live performances, opened in the building in February 2022. A story in the Daily Hampshire Gazette about the opening includes some history of the Majestic.

The Penn Theater building was condemned by the city of Butler in October 2022. A month later the building was sold and the new owner “envisions it serving as a multi-purpose venue in downtown” with work expected over the winter of 2022-23.

I live on this block. The Jewel Theater building was torn down in 2019/2020. A 12-story apartment building, with space for the church on the ground floor, is nearing completion.

The interior decorating business is gone and the theater is now home to a candy store.
