FAMILY Theatre; Gloversville, New York.

Family Theatre was located at 26-38 N. Main Street in Gloversville, New York. The theatre was built in 1880 by A.J. Kasson, a glove manufacturer. First called Kasson Opera House, it was bought in 1920 by the Schine brothers. The Schine’s rebuilt the theatre from one floor to two. The building became the headquarters for the entire Schine organization. The theatre closed in the 1960’s. The building is now called Memorial Hall. It is used for office space and retail stores.

I believe the Schine Brothers were originally from Gloversville NY. Interesting to read that this former theatre was originally an opera house. Many small towns had opera houses and so many of them are gone today.

The Schine brothers appreciated the start they got in Gloversville,NY- and were extremely loyal to the city. They not only lived there, but maintained their headquarters in Gloversville through the mid 1960’s when the chain was forced to dissipate. Many stars used to come and make courtesy appearance at the Schine’s Glove theatre. (See Schine’s Hippodrome theatre and Glove theatre on CINEMA TREASURES.)

G. David Schine a son of one of the Schine brothers was a major supporter of Sen. Joseph McCarty in the 1950’s. He was featured promently on television during the army-Mccarthy hearings. For our younger readers this was a mojor event in the 1950’s
