My husband has fond memories of this theater & seeing Star Wars here, as well as (I think) Jaws. He says he remembers being lined up around the building outside in the heat waiting to get in.
We even contemplated having our wedding reception here when we got married, since it’s now a banquet hall. :)
As of today, Crestwood Court (the current name of the mall complex) is virtually a ghost town. I think the only chain department store left in the mall is Sears, all the others pulled out a long time ago. And almost all of the franchise chain stores in the mall have closed. I was last inside the mall in December 2010, getting a Christmas gift for someone at Sears, and even being a couple days before Christmas the place was completely deserted. I guess with people moving farther south, & the remodel of South County Center, this mall is being abandoned. I’m really surprised that the AMC theater here is still open, because I can’t imagine who goes to it!
(On the bright side, if someone wanted to film a zombies-take-over-the-mall movie, this would be the perfect place to do it!)
My sister-in-law, Rhonda Graves, used to work at the Melvin in the ‘80s. I only went there once when I was a kid (in the late 80s). I still remember, it was a double feature of “The Seventh Sign” and “Friday The 13th Part VII”. It cost me a whopping FIFTY CENTS. :)
The area where the theater once stood is now part of a small shopping plaza which housed (until March of this year) a Missouri Career Center (unemployment office).
This building is right down the street from where I live now. I always harbored secret dreams of restoring it to an art house theater. Although the marquee is gone now, the building has been beautifully restored on the outside (I can’t say what the inside looks like, as I’ve never been in pre/post renovation). The front of the building is nice, and the current owners built an entrance/porch onto the side of the building (facing the parking lot), where once would have been the emergency exit, I assume. I’m glad that this is one classic theater that got restored/repurposed & saved, rather than just being demolished. :)
I have the vaguest memory of the Granada as a kid, I know that it’s where I saw my first movie (The Empire Strikes Back). I didn’t realize that it was torn down in the 90s, I had always heard that there was a fire there. I must have gotten it confused with something else!
