Hi George, I also have that cd. It not only has the December 1964 show, which I attented, it also includes the 1963 show with The Chiffons,The Angels,Jan & Dean etc. I have both of those shows on individual albums which I got at the Brooklyn Fox. Remember at the 63 show the MC announces “The Brooklyn Fox theatre prouldly presents Murray the K’s holiday revue!” I believe there is a third live album which I haven’t been able to add to my collection. I have to check E Bay. Anyway,we all can agree on the great memories we share of this wonderful theatre!

I agree,George, those times listening to AM radio,WMCA,WABC or WINS and Murray the K were fun times. It really broke my heart to hear the Brooklyn Fox closed down. Growing up in Brooklyn, I always viewed the downtown area as its Times Square with all the different theatres, restaurants & stores. One of my first jobs was working downtown in the old Mays department store. I would walk by the theatres to check out what was playing. Now all of them are gone.

Brooklyn Fox-thanks for the memories! I remember being at that same Murray the K show too. I’m also a big Dusty Springfield fan.Didn’t she sing “Wishin & Hopin”? I would try and catch all Murrays holiday shows as I lived in Brooklyn at that time, maybe 20 minutes away by subway. It would only cost $2.50 for the live show and a movie. If you arrived before noon you would get a free Murray the K album. The WMCA Goodguys also put on shows at the NY Paramount around this time.

I lived on 4th Ave. between 23rd & 24th Streets in the late 50’s. I always remembered a movie theater being close to my house but forgot the name. My friends would say that there was always a bowling alley at that site. Now I can see I was right. As a kid I remember walking to the Paradise with my parents,it was only a few blocks away. I must have been 4 or 5 at that time. I have great memories of that neighborhood.

Frankie reading your post reminded me that I also brought my mom to the Alpine to see that “E.T.” revival.I also remember the sound was bad for that show, too low. Anyway I agree, movie going will one day be a thing of the past. What a shame.

What a sad day for Bay Ridge! I remember as a kid, going to the Lowe’s Alpine when it was a single theater, seeing “Help!” starring The Beatles, with all my friends. Bay Ridge lost a lot of great movie theaters, including the Fortway,Dyker & Harbor. What a tragedy!I will remember the Alpine when it was at its best, a huge single screen movie palace, where a kid in Bay Ridge could spend a weekend afternoon catching some great movies.

Hi Bill,
Would love to hear your memories of the Murray the K shows at the Brooklyn Fox. I attended many of his shows and recieved the free albums you passed out when one got there for the early show. I met a few of the performers myself after one of his Easter shows and they weren’t all that pleasant.

Sorry Warren,I should have made myself more clear,it was empty of shoppers. I use to work in that building when it was A&S back in the early 70’s and I wanted to stop in for a look now that it’s become Macys. First thing I noticed was how empty it was compared to when I was employed there. It always seemed crowded with shoppers back then. Also the place lost some of its splender to me. I always thought that this store was the gem of the A&S franchise. It seemed all the shoppers were at the bargain/99 cents stores. They were packed! I also walked by the spots where our old movie palaces once stood. As you know,Con Edison is where the Fox once was. I still have fond memories of that place and appreciate your photos.

Thanks Warren for those great photos of the Brooklyn Fox. I was just in the downtown Brooklyn area to visit Juniors restaurant and it was a shame to see how that neighborhood has changed. I could still picture the Brooklyn Fox,RKO Albee & Lowe’s Metropolitan in all their glory. Now with all the downtown movie theaters gone there is nothing but 3rd rate bargain stores and an empty Macys. I can remember,as a kid, shopping with my family at all the big stores,A&S,Martins,E J Korvettes,Mays & McCorys. And who can forget all the great Murray the K shows at the Fox? Everything is gone, but at least we have some photos to preserve those great memories.

I recall the Beatles doing a broadcast concert in 64 that was shown in US theaters. It also featured The Beach Boys & Lesley Gore. I see a copy of the Beach Boys performance from that show on E Bay a lot.I also see tickets from that broadcast on E Bay too.

As a kid I lived on 4th Ave. and I recall going to a movie theater only a few blocks from my house. I believe it was the Paradise. I remember the bowling alley vividly. I bowled there several times but I could never recall the name of the theater.I saw “Attack of the 50 ft. Woman” there so the place must have closed in the late 50’s.Thanks to this site I can finally put a name to those movie memories.

I am totally shocked & saddened to hear of the Fortways closing. I had no idea. As a former resident of Bay Ridge I visited the Fortway frequently. I always preferred it over the Alpine. I can remember seeing Easy Rider for the first time at the Fortway. In fact I remember the theater before it became a mutliplex. They use to show some great horror flicks there back in the 70’s. I just hate to hear when a movie theater closes. Very sad. Goodbye old friend.

Was reading the earlier posts and wanted to let Warren know it was Dean & Jean who performed at the WMCA Goodguys Show at the Paramount. They were a couple who had a hit called “Tra La La Suzy” around that time.I happened to catch that show and it was great. But the one I was at had a different lineup. I believe the Goodguys changed the headliners after a few days. Along with Dean & Jean and some of the other acts Warren mentioned were The 4 Seasons,Lesley Gore and James Brown. I do remember the theater being massive and that the movie with Juliet Mills was quite boring. It was a black & white British comedy about a misadventures of a bad daughter.
Anyway,I wish I would have saved my program from the show.As a kid in the 60’s I didn’t realize it might be a collecters item today.

I most likely was at that Easter show,I never missed one. I wish I had saved the programs, they have since become collectors items. I saw a few on E Bay going for a large sum. Remember when the WMCA Goodguys did their own rock n roll show at the NY Paramount? I think that was in 1964 also. Another massive theater too.

Yes,the Fox was extremely large. I remember sitting up in the top of the balcony at one of Murray the K’s shows. It seemed like I was miles away from the stage. To a kid that place was massive! It cost $2.50 back then to see Murray the K’s rock n roll show which also included some lousy movie. If you arrived early you got a free Murray the K album. We would get to the Fox hours before the show started and waited on lines that snaked around the block for a good seat & free lp. We even got to meet The Shangri-las at one show when they stepped out to get something to eat. They were stuck up & wouldn’t give autographs. I think I must have seen every important singer/group of the 60’s at these shows.

Thanks for the hook up to all the photos of the Fox! What great memories they brought back. I’ll never forget all the Murray the K shows I went to there as a kid. I think over the years the downtown Brooklyn area started to decline and people just stopped traveling there to see a movie. I remember the huge Fox & Albee showing movies straight from their run in Manhattan, but towards the end the movies seemed like lousy B flicks. People started watching more TV and catching movies at their neighborhood theater.I still mourn the loss of this great movie palace.

I use to live on 4th Ave.& 24th St. back in the 60’s/70’s.I remember all those theaters very well. I also have fond memories of the Park movie across from Sunset Park, which is now a supermarket. And I remember going to see the Batman flick at the old Sanders near Prospect Park. I can’t seem to recall what was on 4th ave. & 16 St. back then.I use to go to the Avon & Prospect theaters on 9th St as a kid. I loved the Avon. It’s a shame we have lost all these great theaters.

I remember Robert Hall & TSS also. But I always remember the Coliseum showing Spanish films. Did anyone ever remember a movie theater on 4th Ave. & 29th Street? It was a bowling alley at one time, then a gas station. For some reason I have a vague memory of seeing “Attack Of the 50ft. Woman” at this theater. I am probably mistaken.

I recall as a kid taking the bus to the Alpine to see “Help” with the Beatles. It was a nice big single theatre then, now as a multiplex it is terrible. The last time I was there was about 1990 and it was very bad!I could hear the movie in the next theatre-the walls seemed paper thin. Also it was too small, dirty & very crowded. I never have gone back.

BklynRob commented about RKO Dyker Theatre on Apr 30, 2005 at 5:34 pm

I recall seeing The Way We Were at the Dyker with my girlfriend at the time. It was a nice clean theatre,as were all the theatres in Bay Ridge at that time. I also liked the Harbor on 4th Ave. I was so saddened whenever I heard of one of them closing. It seems a pity todays kids can’t see all these great movie houses of our day.

BklynRob commented about RKO Albee Theatre on Apr 30, 2005 at 5:28 pm

I remember the RKO ALbee very well. It was a beautiful theatre. I loved going to downtown Brooklyn as a kid with my family. We kids would see a movie at THe Albee or Fox,while my mom & grandmother shopped at A&S,Martins and Mays department stores.Later,we would go eat at Juniors. I recall seeing the old Beach Party movies there.

I remember back in the 70’s traveling up to the Walker on 18th Ave.because they had a midnight showing of the original Night Of The Living Dead. What a scary flick! Anyway,I had forgotten about this theatre, sorry to hear it closed. I’m surprised since 18th Ave. is such a busy shopping area.I also recall they showed a lot of Italian films.

BklynRob commented about Terminal Theatre on Apr 30, 2005 at 4:57 pm

I remember going to the Terminal as a kid when we moved from Bushwick to lower Park Slope. They used to show 3 films, not first run, some kind of old,but they always had some good horror flicks. One would be in there for the whole day. The admission was real cheap too. Later I recall it being a church.
