That’s interesting, they usually did this at the Oasis.
I remember like it was yesterday seeing Alice in Wonderland in the Ridgewood as a kid. I believe I also saw Pinnochio and 101 Dalmations there in the 70’s.
I saw Snow White, Bambi, and I think Peter Pan at the Oasis. I can’t remember if I saw Lady and the Tramp at the Ridgewood or at the Oasis.
I also saw Dumbo at either the Oasis or the Ridgewood. It also could be either.
I past by the Wagner this evening, and peaked in the 99 cents store as I drove by (I was stuck at the light at the corner anyway). It has glass doors now, and inside it has a drop ceiling. A quick glance doesn’t reveal any original interior, and there is a fake drop ceiling in the store.
As for the Brooklyn thing, this theater is the one in the immediate area out of all the ones that they adevertised in Brooklyn, but are really in Queens (Parthenon, Madison, Ridgewood, Oasis (how dumb), etc, and then the one that is CLEARLY in Brooklyn, the Wagner, they say is in Queens!
Heh, I like lostmemory’s comment….put porn in the theater, and then, and only then say it’s in Queens…..
Heh. While at least when they did this for the Madison (which was Queens, but just slightly over the border from Brooklyn), or for the Ridgewood Theater (which is/was also Queens, but a few more blocks over the border from Brooklyn than the Madison into Queens) – at least they were only a block or two from Brooklyn. The Oasis was no where near Brooklyn, being at least 10 or more blocks from Brooklyn!
Obviously, there must have been some economic advantage to advertize all these physically Queens theaters as “Brooklyn”, whereas all three of them were physically in Queens, and always were.
If you take the multiplexing of some of the other theaters, such as the Ridgewood Theater, most of the auditorium ornamentation survives, except for the fact that it has walls cutting up thing, like the huge ceiling circle, etc.
Those three windows survived until the 90’s. (Well they are probably still there, but covered with the Liberty Dept store). The building was even steam cleaned and stone repointed in the early 90’s, the windows were even replaced…it looked great, but then they decided to put that huge sign up, and they have been covered ever since. I don’t believe the stonework around the windows was damaged, as the sign seems to stick out from the surface a bit.
Thanks so much Warren! They are great! This is the first time I have seen the interior of the Madison since it was a theater – Liberty Dept Store doesn’t count! I wish they were better quality, but these are certainly better than nothing. The curve of the balcony line is the only thing that is still recognizable presently in the Liberty Dept Store. Hard to believe that ceiling is all covered on top of the “fake” ceiling – well, what’s left of it anyway.
Keep them coming…hopefully we will see a photo of the Ridgewood soon too!
Wow, that was a lowpoint for the poor Oasis wasn’t it!?
My memories of the Oasis was seeing Disney films there as a kid in the 70’s – a far cry from that film!
Haha. I was scrolling through the “newest theater” section because I hadn’t had time to for a while…and how did I know what to expect when I clicked on this one….
Wow, did that scene change. NOTHING remains from that scene. I was by there last summer, and it is a park there now (I guess a part of the housing project).
The el is gone, the theater is gone, all the buildings are gone. Totally different scene today…..
Here’s a photo of the March Theater building taken this past March. I forgot to post the link here back when I took the photo. The building is still there and is currently a clinic. I don’t remember what the right side of the building is:
I’m sure it will, but then again, just about any theater showing Star Wars this weekend will probably be a zoo. I will probably wait a week or two before going to see it.
Here is the photo of the Eagle Warren mentioned that I took last summer, on top of the old Chopin Theater, which was also known as the American Theater: Click here for photo link
Yes, the Regal in Ronkonkoma is a nice place to go. It’s not as crowded as the Island 16, but is a nice theater. It’s one of the first in the wave of modern multiplexes, with stadium seating etc. The Regal used to be packed when it first opened, but the Island 16 took a lot of business away from it it appears.
Here is a photo of the old Ritz Theater building taken yesterday, now housing the Blockbuster Video. The facade of the building was resurfaced in the early 80’s when it was still “Roman Furniture”. The marquee was also removed at that point.
I believe “Casino” was it’s name near the end (the last or current name of any theater is the name used on this site, even if it’s not the name that it is most known for. This is done for consistency.)
Anyway, “Casino” was definitely it’s name, it’s noticable in the www.nycsubway.org photos taken at the Kosciuszko St station, linked above.
According to your account, someone familiar with the area back then, apparently it seems that it wasn’t too long that it was known as the “Casino”, just before it was abandoned as a theater i assume.
Yes it does. They sould like gougers, and apparently are very difficult to deal with. What a shame the tehater is in their hands.
It was offered to him at a later date than July 2002, because it’s the NEW owners that said they want the 3 million.

Ah, it was cut up totally different than other cut up “multiplexes” I am thinking of.

Here’s a current photo I took last year, by the way (I think I linked to it somewhere in this thread, but couldn’t find my post).

It was on the corner of Monroe St and Howard Ave. If you look at the photo I linked above, the streetsign next to the McDonalds is Monroe.
Robert, the entire block looked terribly run down even in the 40’s!
Cool, the link worked.

Speaking of Movieland, there is also one of those in mastic come to think of it.

There’s the old 4 screen Sayville Theater.

I recently went to see Amityville Horror here. Actually, it seemed a bit cleaner than the last time I was there.
