Located on the corner of Marcy Avenue and Broadway in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. The Marcy Photo Theatre was opened in 1916 with 716 seats. In 1952 alterations and a modernization were carried out to the plans of architectural firm Shampan & Shampan. The seating capacity was reduced to 461. It was closed in 1972. It became a shoe store. The building was demolished in spring of 2019.

In 1963, the Marcy was operated by Harold Goldman and David Sanders. Their office was on West 44th Street in NYC. Other theaters operated by Goldman-Sanders at the time were the Edison, Metropolitan and Studio, all in Manhattan.

Thanks for the info. However as kids we did hot care who owned the Moviehouse….We only went to the Movies on Saturday afternood to see Cartoons and kids shows, but now it’s good to know who ran the place and why they closed the place…..I really never remember and kids shows in that moviehouse…I went there with my Aunt only once to the Marcy Theater…..We as kids went to the Commodore,Republic, or the Williamsburgh…….Anniegirl
I wonder what if any part of the old interior is intact in the medical building it is used for now.
There was a mention above about the Edison theatre. I have a vague recollection of the name, but cannot recall the location. There does not appear to be a CT page at present. I suspect that it was not the site at the Edison Hotel on West 47th St. where Oh Calcutta played on and on, and is now the site of the Edison Ballroom.
I remember taking the then B53 bus (now the Q54) to Bridge Plaza to transfer to the M39 to cross the Williamsburg Bridge. I was a kid and I remember the marquee to the Marcy Theater.
I am wondering how long before they tear this down for new construction. The bodega that was next door for almost 50 years recently closed.
Update: The clothing store, Rainbow, is closing this location. I wonder if they will tear these building down? I will try and post a picture.
The building that house the Marcy is no more, it’s been demolished. I had planned to take some pics from the Jamaica-bound J platform but I didn’t get the chance.
Did this theatre ever go to porno before finally closing>
Back in the 1950’s it may have shown Spanish double features.
