That’s dumb. Shopping centers are a dying breed along with theaters.

This was part of the Prudential chain which ruled Suffolk County whereas the Deer Park was under the banner of Associated Independent Theaters, most of which were in Nassau County.

Commack had a couple of things against it; the design (the add ons) and the opening of the new multiplex at the Arches. New Theater in, old theater out. The Commack killed the twin RKO and the Mayfair, at the very least.

Orlando, from your comments on various theater sites you must have had a very extensive career.

It was announced that Oscar winning actress Geena Davis, in conjunction with Walmart, is launching The Bentonville Film Festival to promote diversity in film. The festival is set for May 5-9 and promises guaranteed distribution for its winning films. The actress has been a long-time advocate for female visibility in the movies, both on-screen and behind the camera through her Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.

I believe it would have been a combination of redistributing the space and expanding into adjacent retail space. The theater was located in the shopping center not, as an adjacent building. Hence not building from the ground up. Also, I believe it was on the second level of the shopping center, not the ground floor.

The Orpheum has had a number of successful live productions over the years. I saw Your Own Thing there which opened on June 13, 1968 and ran for 933 performances.

Would be nice if someone had a picture of the theater with the marquee.

Maybe they’ll use the pylon for the OTB operation. Interesting note, the former Jerry Lewis in Lake Ronkonkoma, aka Lakeside Cinema, now houses an OTB outlet. And, as far as pylons go, the one for Century’s Whitman is still up despite the fact that the theater has been gone for a long time. Pylon for the Patchogue Multiplex advertises the new housing development coming in; the one for the Skyway Drive In in Greenport the local Lutheran Church; the one for the Rocky Point Drive In is just derelict.

rivest266 is Mike Rivest from Montreal, Canada who has created his own website of theaters in the United States and Canada which is available on a down loadable spreadsheet at movie-theatre.org. He has amassed some very interesting material on US theaters figuring he lives in a different country.

You’ve got some work to do, Joe. Only the Antique aka Liberty is on CT.

Bow Tie did not take over all the Clearview locations. The Grand Avenue must be at least the fourth they’ve dropped, most recently the Babylon. This one has life after Bow Tie.

Now they have a campaign to get real theater seats and a marquee and vertical.

So if Sears is leaving Canada that leaves a big hole in Toronto’s marketplace. First Marks and Spencer went, then Eaton’s, now Sears. Who’s going to take over their outlets beside Hudson Bay?

Yes, it’s true. After 30 years it’s bye, bye. When I called the Theater the message referred me to the Cinema Cycle site. On there was more info. Tomorrow, 12/1 is the final, special showing. Subsequently they’ll be having a sale of spinning and movie items.

Was the shutdown permanent or just the usual winter hiatus? I’m going to call the theater and see what more I can determine.

robboehm commented about Town Theatre on Nov 30, 2014 at 7:03 pm

The Town and the Glen Cove were next to each other, almost like formerly cojoined twins. Don’t remember which was to the right, or left, of which. Therefore, the addresses can’t be all that different.

robboehm commented about Community Theatre on Nov 29, 2014 at 2:16 am

Above comment says Community was built after the theater down the street burnt down. However, the Community is the only theater listed in Catskill on Cinema Treasures. More info so some research can be done. Or somebody create the site.
