The Athena Hall a was built in 1874 as Town Hall. It later became a roller skating rink, before becoming a movie theatre known as the Port Jefferson Theatre. In the late-1960’s and early-1970’s it became the Art Theatre, playing many French and Italin films.
In the late-1970s it became Theatre Three, a place for live performances all year long. If you pay for your ticket you will still see the projection room. Mostly Theater Three has musicals, although there have been some non-musical productions.

While looking up something on microfilm in the Port Jefferson Record in 1958 I noticed an article saying the old Port Jefferson Theatre would reopen with a new policy as the Art. And so it did.
When Theatre Three presented its first show in the building formerly known as Athena Hall, it was known as Theatre Three at the Scrimshaw Theatre. I was in the first musical performed there, ANYTHING GOES, and had a t-shirt calling it the Scrimshaw Theatre.
Actually, the building dates back to 1863, which happens to be the same year as the Battle of Gettysburg. I wonder if that’s where people got news of the battle.
I would like to encourage more people to go there and see a show. I would also like for them to contribute to the restoration fund. I ushered there during a storm and parts of the roof leak (lol) However, it is a beautiful theatre or theater and should remain.

Theatre suffered an estimated $50,000 in damages from the ravages of the severe storm Tuesday, September 25th. They hope to be open by the weekend none-the-less.
