B.S. Moss opened this seven-screen theatre on June 3, 1983 in the Korvettes Mall. The theatres were nothing special and ranged in size from 300 to 115 seats. The agreement with the mall prevented any movies from running past 1AM on Friday and Saturday nights.
Shortly after this B.S. Moss, on April 22, 1988 UA were operating the theatre. While B.S. Moss was still involved, the theatre was kept up, and it had a big overhaul in the early-1990’s, which added stereo to all seven screens, new concession stands and preview monitors around the lobby. After that UA let the theatre fall apart and they dropped it in the spring of 2004. It last operated as an independent and closed on April 26, 2008. It reopened under new management on June 27, 2008. It was closed on July 3, 2018.

Not closing in April, bot possibly within a year or so. City is holding up the permits…will take time to get approved if at all.
There is a banner up at entrance to the theater saying Movieworld will remain open.
No showings before 3:15 this week, they always had showings at 1 PM or so and decent audiences.
This one always seemed like a small theater, and despite being small it has multiple screens, its one of the few of the original theaters in the area that is still around and hasn’t changed that much over the years.
Closing in July, according to this news report
Closing on July 3rd with a celebration party on the 2nd. Please share any pictures/stories/memories on facebook or here. https://www.facebook.com/movieworlddouglaston/
Please update, theatre open June 3, 1983 and the largest theatre was 300 and the smallest was 115
Just added in the photos sections, grand opening ad when UA took control of Movieworld on April 22, 1988
What a shame. This place was great The owners were doing alright but the plaza owners wanted to make room for a Lowe’s and it was going to use the lower level for the heavy material sold at the store. The would not agree to renew the movieworld lease fools 3+ years later and Lowe’s never showed up. Douglaston plaza is close to being a ghost town now.
