There are pictures here of the marquee with the infamous “C-note” donors and the ceiling coming down.

Here is a picture of the marquee advertising the bankruptcy sale.

Here is a small picture of the facade from it’s theatre days.

There is a story here about the Latino format, which suprisingly did not work.

I found this picture on the web, you can see it was once a Pussycat house (or Tomcat)from the round ovals on the marquee.

This is a true neighborhhod house. Think how common they were and almost all of them are gone.

There have been a few posts here on the selection committee and choosing of films. Were prints shipped to the Music hall for all the choices to be screened? Was this done in the auditorium or did the hall have a screening room?

WOW Newark sure had a lot of theatres in it’s day.

I think the marquee for the twin is still standing there. What was the twin called? Were they big houses?

I don’t think I ever heard of “Moon Pilot”, I have to look that one up.

Did anyone notice the double bill on 10/6/71? Around the World in 80 Days and West Side Story, now thats a long show.

It would be easy to open this up again as a drive-in if somebody wanted to be daring.

At least they played it in 70mm for the 25th anniversary at the Trans-Lux East (Gotham). It’s my favorite film but I refused to see it in that sing along version.

I have papers my mother saved from JFK’s assasination and I think most of the Broadway theatres were dark in memorial to the president. Did it mention anything about movie theatres? Everyone was glued non-stop to the TV.

I would love to see this at the Music Hall during one of their dark periods, but I guess it’s just wishful thinking.

I would be interested in being on a committee to save either or both theatres.

Shouldent this read “is being operated by the non-profit Friends of the Loews”?

One of the original owners were Richie Cortez and then later on Nick Marino. Depsite the neighborhood they did very good grosses at one time. There were however many internal problems between the partners. I remember Nick Marino produced a film called Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers that premiered at the Egyptian.

RobertR commented about Westbury Drive-In on Mar 18, 2005 at 5:38 am

Westbury still did good grosses and there had been talk about another drive-in being opened on Long Island after it closed. I think we could support a drive-in out here, the only problem is the real estate is so expensive. To get the city people to attend it would make more sense to have it in Nassau instead of Suffolk.
