@benpaz same here in Rockaway, where it’s playing Beauty and the Beast in 2d for the majority of the showtimes and 3d late at night. So far, imax beauty and the best has been selling out more than the 3d and 2d version as the imax version fills more of the screen than the widescreen version of the movie although said movie wasn’t shot on imax cameras.

At the time of its opening in 1993, it was the first and only movie theater in East Hanover, and the first Loews/Sony theater since the closure of the Loews Troy Hills in the early 90s. It was also one of the first Loews in NJ to share the Star Theatres design with others.

The outers had two screens with Dolby Stereo when it opened in 1981. It was also the far superior theater compared to the inners.

So far the theater was closed for a day and a half which isn’t bad compared to what happened during Sandy and Irene years ago. On some of the seats you can see some wear and tear. Once AMC is done with renovating East Hanover, they can move on and renovate Rockaway soon.

Sometimes AMC would show separate showtimes for imax movies switching from 3d to 2d.

I know that. Most people thought that Sony killed the Loews brand during its control of the chain from Coke in 1989. Tristar owned the theaters starting in 1985 in a joint venture with CBS and HBO. The joint venture broke up but Coke kept the chain when it merged Tri-Star into Columbia in the late 80s until the Japanese electronics giant took over. During Sony’s reign, when Playstation came out, they had kiosks inside the lobbies of the theaters. Advertisements for Sony music would play in the theaters, and a majority of the theaters would use SDDS much like its competitor (and soon to be parent) AMC as well as show Sony’s movie studio slate. In 1997, Sony reverted back to the Loews name and merged it with Cineplex Odeon; that relationship lasted a short time before Chapter 11 came along, forcing private companies to take over the chain. In 2006, Loews merged with AMC, and the rest is history. Loews was owned by the tisch family when they took control of the chain after it was spun off from MGM in the late 1950’s in 1969, and it became a huge conglomerate that owned everything from hotels to cigarettes and watches.

Blame the closing in the 1970s on the Rockaway Mall…

Back then it was crazy for a 12 screener to be operated by AMC although it was two separate buildings with some movies opening on two or more screens in order to fulfill demand.

BTW, went to see Logan this morning at around 10:30 when during the Kong Skull island show in imax the projector broke down, forcing management to cancel the show and offer the audience a free movie pass!!! As for Logan, when the AMC logo came out the projection was windowboxed until the curtains formatted it to an almost correct ratio. I noticed near the auditorium that they had a 3d recycling bin for the glasses since the projectors were 3d ones. Image was somewhat bright and sharp when the lights were half dimmed but when the feature presentation began it looked kinda blurry. Audio was pretty good and the audience behaved. This movie will have legs. I hope the snowstorm that will affect the area doesn’t damage theaters like this one this week!!!

Any grand opening ads? I read on new york magazine that this theater showed ET in 35mm during the summer of 1982 along with Tron in Dolby Stereo.

We all know how this story ended with star wars. One of the first theaters in NJ to be equipped with Dolby Digital Surround EX for star wars. Also one of the first to have Dolby 7.1 Surround.

It used to be Sony Theaters when it opened in late 1993. It became Loews in 1997 a year before the Loews Cineplex merger. In 2006 it became AMC Loews and starting this year it will be just AMC East Hanover as AMC is rebranding its theaters into three: AMC, AMC Classic, and AMC Dine-In.
