This chain has another theater with 10 screens also in Prague 1. I was very fortunate to see Stae of Play there in English with Czech sub titles. The interesting thing about movie theatres there are all seats are reserved like the old roadshow days. My partner and I didn’t know and when people came and said we were in there seats we had to move. The tehater was state of art with stadium seating, dolby digital sound and wall to wall screens. It was a great experience.

The V over the center of the marquee disappeard in 1968. The original name Virginia was in green letters on both sides of the marquee. The V was also green. The new letters were white background with red letters.
I think that man Of La Manch was the last roadshow engagement that I rememebr being around. In Phila where I was it played roadshow att eh SamEric AKA Boyd.
I was in Bristol on Saturday and saw this lovely theatre. I have taken a picture to post, but unfortunatley I don’t know how to do it since the add a photo link is offline.
Will it still operate as a movie theatre after the transition? As long it is a movie theatre I will send donations. if’s it’s going to live entertainment, I wouldn’t.
Wehn I moved to Tampa in 1983, the theatre was a triplex run by General Cinema. When GC pulled oout of Tampa it was purchased by Muvico and than Regal and than closed and reopened under the current owner. Right behind this theatre was the AMC Twin Bay 4 which used to be AMC’s discount house in Tampa. I was in the theatre once after it became 8 screens and it was terrible. Most of the theatres were very small like a living room. Before it closed as a GCC theatre, it had one large theatre that held about 900 people and 2 smaller theatres.
The Joy theatre on Canal St is for sale as I beleive is the old Loews State on Canal St. You can pull up both thetares here. There is also a great documentary called No More Joy that gives the history of the theatre. It’s available through Amazon.
I was in Miami Beach in March and the theatre is well maintained. Unfortunatley the former Surf which is around the corber and housed Med Fit Gym for many years has closed. Veneviosn International which ha studios int he oild Shore theatre across the street had posters in the window, but no mention of taking it over.
Looking at the picture, is that still the box office in the front? I know the enterence is now on the side like the Moorlyn. It’s amazing how the Frank’s ruin every theatre they get their hands on.
I think that Mayor Nutter’s support is extremly important. I can’t see that between now and July 16 he would pull the plug. The Boyd/SamEric was an important part of my life in Phila. The first time I went to this great theatre was in 1972 during the roadshow engagement of Man Of La Mancha and didn’t return until 1975 when I saw GWTW, but after that I was a regualr customer until I moved to Fla in 1983. On a retrun visit in 1991 at Christmas, I sawe Hook there.
This was originally Hunt’s Rio Twin. This theatre was the only one in the area that was open all year round. I don’t think this was part of the original sale of Hunt theatre’s to Frank theatre’s.
The last time I was in New Orelans was 2003 Labor Day weekend and they were showing movie classics all weekend. As much as I wanted to go, I didn’t because it just didn’t feel safe.

As you mentioned above, Carmike remodeled the Hillsboro 8 in 1999. I can never find any listings on this theatre so I assume it’s closed.
When it opened in the 80’s it was the most luxousious theatre in the Tampa are. Are auditoriums had purple curtains that opened up and down and very comnfortable seats. Originally the theatre was operated by Plitt than sodl to Cineplex Odeon

A second thought. They should rename this theatre the Tower East
I am glad this theatre is doing well. I know AMC doesn’t like single screen theatres. I was sure they would have closed this theatre.
Considering this theatre has always been the worse for concessions this is a good thing. Their large was smaller than Regal’s medium

Where was the Michael Todd and the Cinstage? The Chicago and the oriental never had roadshow engaements?
