Your comments about Dayton all seem valid, but my remark about being surprised about Dayton getting two bookings had more to do with comparing it to the “Empire” booking situation in the larger Ohio market of Cleveland (which didn’t get it at all until the mid-June general release) and similar-sized market of Toledo (which had only a single booking).

And no one is questioning your memory. What informed folks are claiming is that the proper presentation of standard 35mm formats is that the screen height, in any given auditorium, ought to be the same so that any aspect ratio differences are noticed only in the horizontal plane. If the height is shortened for a scope presentation, then that is a compromise and a showmanship violation.
The Dome is featured in the Photo Gallery on the Fans of Showmanship website (membership required). Included on the Dome’s page are numerous images, both contemporary and vintage, including shots of some of the theater’s personnel and its projection equipment.
I saw “Jurassic Park” a few times during its release, including twice on opening weekend. One of the viewings was at the AVCO. Little did I know at the the time that that would be the last time I would see a movie in their great 1,100-seater before its twinning. Subsequent viewings were at the CINEDOME, CINEMAPOLIS, and Edwards BIG NEWPORT, all presented in DTS.
I don’t think “Jurassic Park” holds up well on repeat viewings, among the reasons being I didn’t find the characters all that appealing. But that first viewing with an audience was an incredible and unforgettable experience.
Regarding Justin’s remark that “Jurassic Park” was the first mega blockbuster of the 1990s, I would submit “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” ought to have that title. “T2” was released in 1991 and did over $200 million, an incredible feat at the time considering it was rated R.
And regarding DTS, there were more than 800 installations for the “Jurassic Park” release. More than a “few select theaters” I’d say.
TRIVIA: “Jurassic Park” is widely recognized as the first official release with a DTS soundtrack. On what titles(s) was DTS tested before the green light was given for its use on “Jurrasic Park”?

I see a lot of conflicting details: In the posts above there are references to “Center” and “Lubliner & Trinz.” Newspaper ads in the Chicago newspapers never identified an owner, at least the ads I’ve referenced. Industry trade VARIETY, during the 1970s in their weekly gross section, listed it as “Center.” And Dolby Stereo installation documents from the late 1970s list it as “Lubliner & Sterns.”
So…does anyone know definitively the ownership history of McCLURG COURT?

Anyway, I wouldn’t be giving you a hard time if you hadn’t made that pompous remark about having a perfect memory in the “When visiting Cinema Treasures, what is the first section of the site you go to?” thread, or if you hadn’t disrespected me with your inability to bring to a close our argument regarding “Star Wars” at the Edens Theater.
I’m beginning to think that the #2 auditorium was the larger of the two. From the newspaper ads I’ve seen, it seems the big event films tended to play in #2. But comments earlier in this discussion suggest that #1 was the larger of the two. Can anyone confirm?

While doing some research on Cinerama presentations in Chicago, I was surprised to learn that the EDENS had a seven-week 70mm run of “This Is Cinerama” during the summer of 1973. I was aware that the film was re-issued in ‘73, but was surprised that of all the venues in the Chicago area where it could have been booked, it played the EDENS…and on screen #2 no less.
Did either screen at EDENS have a curved screen, or does anyone know/recall if a temporary curved screen was installed (as was done in many other venues across the country) just for the “This Is Cinerama” engagement?

during the 1990s. However, its current operator is AMC.
Here’s a breakdown of the UPTOWN’s ownership during the past thirty years.
