Thanks for the detailed description TonyV, I really liked the RKO Zig-Zag style with all of the chaser bulbs in yellow & white. The Kenmore Theatre in Brooklyn used those type of letters you described on it’s marquee until it closed in 1999, wonder if it was the last one in the city to still have that style.

The vertical on the E-Walk was a great example of an LED simulation that was supposed to resemble the old neon style of days gone by.

Yes, such a prime location could be better put to use than just storage. It’s a shame the Back Lot was not commercially successful, perhaps a Loews Club would have done better back in early days.

AMC should really donate one of the neon Loews signs its in the process of getting rid of to The Museum Of The Moving Image in Astoria Queens for preservation purposes.

How are those big glass vaulted ceilings holding up over the years? Do they ever leak when it rains? Loews took this design and ran with it all throughout the nineties all over the country.

Also it has a great art-deco inspired vertical, very simple but elegant at the same time. Lincoln Square could have used one like this, I hope they don’t get rid of it completely. What every took over what used to be the “Back Lot” in this venue?

What’s funny is that for years after you could still make out the Cineplex Odeon logo on the facade of the Chelsea & First & 62nd theaters. Also up in Canada they have dropped Odeon from the name and are now known as Cineplex Entertainment. I miss the old purple Cineplex logo, it was very indicative of the eighties.

In an old issue of the THS publication “Marquee” from 1982 it was mentioned that part the original neon Loew’s marquee logo from the Delancey wound up in the Century Restaurant on West 43rd off Times Square it filled the entire back wall of the bar. Does anybody here know what ever happened to it after?

Neon signage is a vanishing art form, I hope eventually they will be a new renewed interest in it before it'a too late. Most vintage movie theatre marquee’s were spectacular in using it to draw patrons from the sidewalk in.

They probably will remember. All of the changing out is supposed to happen between now and June, so please let us know what they wind up doing out there. As the Cineplex Odeon name vanishes here, it’s still going strong up in Canada.

As soon as AMC took over in January 2006 all Uniforms, concession stand signage, popcorn bags, soda cups, ticket stubs, film snipes had the AMC logo emblazoned on them so you can tell basically where they were eventually headed, although it has taken 11 years to finally change the marquee’s of whatever Loews & Cineplex Odeon signage is still left at this point.

The first multiplex that opened under the Loews brand when they decided to drop the Sony nameplate was the Loews New Brunswick 18 in New Brunswick NJ in November 1996, the Sony Theatres name switch was announced in April 1994 so it lasted approximately two and a half years. I wonder what the cost was to change all the signage from Loews to Sony, then back from Sony to Loews cost? Also AMC never had much of a presence here in the five boroughs so the Loews name definitely had more recognition in NYC.

Papa did demolish the Tuxedo Theatre on Ocean Parkway to build part of his Trump Village though.

Is the general movie going public that really that uninformed to think that this is the exact same type of IMAX venue as Lincoln Square, I guess so because LieMax & Imin will now be expanding to 175 AMC locations.

If you’re going to be putting on a pair of goggles to give you virtual reality Imax, then what is the point of going to the cinema in the first place? People can just stay on the sofa at home and do it.

Always thought the concession stand here was much nicer than the one on 34th Street, I have pictures I took during the Loews era I will have to find and post here.

Is this the last cinema still in operation in the greater NY area that still had it original Cineplex Odeon signage still intact? There are none left in the boroughs.

This is named after his father Fred, not the Donald.

The marquee in the front that says Cinema, the sale sign used to be over it. Not sure if it is closed, will check it out next time I am near the place.

Status should now be listed as demolished, as that section of the shopping center has been torn down to make way for a new apartment complex.

Yes, it looks like a truck brushed up against it and shredded it. I hope it will be repaired, but somehow doubt it.

Well at least we can take some comfort in knowing the Jersey & Paradise still have their original neon Loew’s signage intact. I wonder if they will keep the auditorium names here? I sure hope that they will.

Regal recliners do seem a bit more comfy than the AMC version, based upon my experience at Regal New Roc City.

I would suspect so, I wonder what they will replace it with? A AMC vertical sign perhaps.
