Sunday night the Chinese was closed for a private screening of what an exiting patron told me was a “ski-skateboard movie” (whatever that is).
It was fun standing in line with my umbrella to get into the 7PM show at the El Capitan. I haven’t stood in line in the rain since my Chicago film going days in the ‘70s.
My $11 senior tix brought me a barrel of fun at the 7PM showing today of “Nightmare Before Christmas 3D”. Rob Richards played Phantom themed tunes before the show on the mighty Wurlitzer. We were given wrist bracelets with bells attached to shake when cued in the movie. Fun lighting and fog effects were used during the movie.
FYI, the Kids Combo for $5.50 gets you a soft drink, popcorn and small bag of M & M candy; you can add a jumbo hotdog-which I did- for $2.50.
Disney does it right with a souvenir quality jumbo ticket. About 300 were at my screening.
The reopening is scheduled for October 28 and I definitely will see a movie there once in a while. I agree, The Regency does a great job running the Academy in Pasadena.
I’m retired and a movie addict, going almost every day. I do appreciate the $5.50 senior rate($5 on Monday) at the Cinemark 8 and they always have the latest movies.

Going to the Crest on Wednesday for the 7:30PM encore showing of “Carmen.” Pam at the Crest is hoping to be listed on the Carmike site in a week or so. That way online tickets can be bought.
More important in my mind is that when a future Carmike website visitor punches in a movie it will pull up the Crest. For instance, Carmike has “Carmen” highlighted in their opening page, but no current listing for the Crest.
Am going to the Bruin on Saturday to see “Jackass 3D.” If this movie doesn’t pull them in nothing will. I was on Hollywood Blvd on Wednesday and the premiere at the Chinese was pandemonium. A large crowd and paparazzi also followed the actors to a cast party at the Hollywood Roosevelt.
William, you can’t compare watching a movie on DVD vs. on the Village’s amazing screen.
AMWAY in 2010 flew 5000 top Chinese producers to L A, about 300 at a time as a sales reward. I wonder if any of them knew about the Village, Chinese, El Capitan, Bruin or Avalon?
LA’s historic theaters need to work with large Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese, and Korean travel agencies to include them in package itineraries. Am I the only one with marketing sense? Asian travelers buy prepackaged tours and are NOT adventuresome on their own. With the weak dollar L A is a huge bargain now.
“Jack Goes Boating” opens today at the Crest with 1, 3 & 7:30 showings. I’ll definitely see it tomorrow at 3PM, as I think it’s not playing anywhere else.

I live in Los Angeles but remember the heyday of the unbelievable runs of “A Man and a Woman” and “Charly.”
The only time I was forced to sit in the front row was when I took a date to see “Charly” during a sold-out screening (Ouch, I think my eyeballs are still hurting).
I cannot understand why domestic and international tourists do not flock to L A for the single screen experience, as business is very soft. What other city still has three 7-day-a-week cinemas seating over 1000 and eight seating 500 or more? In total there are about 25 single screens in LA/Orange County open one or more days a week.
Today, for instance, I am going to the gorgeous 1000-seat Goldwyn theater to see the 50th anniversary showing of “Wild River.” Bruce Dern and others will do a Q & A. The Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Oscars people, run the program and only charge $5 for the public and $3 for academy members.
I have fond memories of seeing Roger Ebert and sometimes Gene Siskel at Chicago theaters in the 60s and 70s. Now I get to talk to Leonard Maltin who is a frequent attendee and/or speaker at L A events.
Sometime in the ‘90s I saw Mandy Patinkin perform at the Orpheum. As luck would have it a local radio station was giving away free tickets and I snared a fabulous seat.
I attended the Michael Jackson movie in 2009 and caught four L A film fest movies in June. The complex does create a sense of the scale of an old movie palace. There was very good buzz at the film festival. Manhattanites eat your hearts out: I park for free at the North Hollywood subway station and metro down to 7th & Figueroa and have a brisk walk from there.
It’s hard for me to understand why the downtown Laemmle could not stay open. There are as many or more residents living closer to the Laeemle and hotels like the Bonaventure are nearby. I did attend a few movies in 2009 and patronage was very small; I’m amazed-I used to live out of a suitcase and would occasionally find a local movie complex to break the routine. Laemmle should have had advertising in the nearby hotels.
Carmike recently installed 3D at the Majestic Crest. I may be one of the few paying customers in the USA who saw “Alpha and Omega” in both 2D and 3D at the same theater. And possibly the only customer in the USA who did not pay a 3D surcharge. The Crest said they had no directive to charge extra for the second week(in 3D) of Alpha and Omega. Going forward thay probably will impose a surcharge.
On Wed evening 10/13 Hollywood Blvd was jammed with spectators for the premiere of “Jackass 3D”. There was an afterparty at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. I hope the thousands of knuckleheads milling around will wake up and start buying tickets at this beautiful theater.
On Monday I got out of the El Capitan at about midnight and saw limos lined up in front of the Chinese for the premiere of the Bruce Willis movie “Red.”
Most of the celebs must have left as there were only a few fans in the forecourt. Long live Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
Giles- the $22 you refer to also includes a drink & popcorn. The $10-$13 seats constitute the vast majority of seating and actually are more screen friendly. The VIP seats are too close to an overpowering screen.
Caught the 7:10PM Tuesday show of “Life As We Know It.” Headcount was 15. I never tire at marveling at this gem of a theater and wonder why it is not publicized around the world. At least I did my bit, spending $16 for tix and refreshments, plus $3 I gladly pay for convenient parking.
Went to the Criterion 6 for the first time on 10/12. The $6 senior Tuesday is a great deal, but the $5 flat rate evening parking is $2 more than Westwood(where you can sometimes find a free spot). Saw “Case 39”, 10:05PM show in one of the downstairs auditoriums. Only eight of us watching quite a good movie-much better than the reviews. The little girl is tremendous, almost as good as the one in “The Bad Seed”, which the Aero showed months ago.
The vertical sign and marquee are amazing-are they reproductions or restored originals?

Folks, I attended the 9:45PM showing of “Secretariat” on Monday 10/18. I expected a smallish crowd but there were only five of us! Each performance they have a free raffle for four club house tickets to Santa Anita and I won. What an experience for $10 senior/$13 general admission. On weekends the house organist plays the Wurlitzer, which I heard at the 7PM 9/5 screening of “Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue.” (A very cute movie). I counted about 95 in the audience. The show included a live Tinkerbell and cascading confetti.
Friends, this is very scary: How can the El Capitan draw only five people when they have a magnificent sign and marquee, Disney enterprises around the world to direct tourist traffic, a revitalized traffic heavy Hollywood Blvd (“Red” was premiering across the street at the Chinese). I assume Disney employees and retirees also get admission discounts.
I for one will attend every upcoming movie at the El Capitan and urge others to do so. Wake up Angelenos-do you know what you are in danger of losing?
The Crest is still running a 1PM show during the week. I wonder if they’ll pick up a few Village or Bruin patrons as it looks as though Regency has cut out their first screening during the week. Village doesn’t start until 4:20 and the Bruin at 4:00.
“Let Me In” is a fascinating movie and I may see it again tonight at the Crest. Probably will try to get in to the Billy Wilder Theater for tonight’s free showing of Jackie Gleason Honeymooners kinescopes. The place should be packed as the LA Times has an article today on the showing.
Not crazy about “Life as We Know It”, but will go to the Village to see it and support Regency.

I remember going to see the 1936 movie “Come and Get It” at the Showcase, sometime in the 1980s. A great movie and a great audience.
