I don’t know about that, but the church did save the letters from the marquee. I’ll suggest it if I talk to anyone up there.

That’s nice, but what makes you think Ted will see it? Did you ever consider buying a stamp? Or even reading enough of the site to figure out that it has nothing to do with the management of the theater? This looks even dumber than people who want to know showtimes, etc. Anyhow, just reading up on other PA theaters to visit while seeing the last of the Jordan, and I had to respond. Too many people clearly weren’t paying attention when they posted.

I called the church, and asked about furnishings, etc. Apparently, both of the projectors are too far gone (someone actually came and looked at them already). It seems as if there was a lot of water damage. The letters have been removed from the marquee, but the marquee is still up. I will be up there Saturday to take some pictures, I may be able to get inside. If I can, I’ll see if there are any small things I can buy. The man to ask at the church is a fellow named Dale, but he was out when I called.

Just wondering if this theater is still in a condition to have its picture taken. I am considering a weekend road trip to see it, but don’t want to get there and find a fence around it. If any locals can help out, I’d appreciate it.

Is the theater still picture-worthy? I’m seriously considering driving up from D.C. this weekend, but I don’t want to get there and find a big fence around it. Can’t believe people are so stupid, it looks like it was renovated as of 1998.

I’ve got a picture. I’d use the add photo feature if it worked.

Paul, is she still in the bank lobby? She’s stunning. I’m a huge fan of old courthouses, and I haven’t seen any that really look like her. Most are the sword and scales variety.

I AM GLAD YOU LIKE YOUR CAPS KEY. I HAVE ONE TOO. THEY ARE FUN.

Okay, really now; yes, the theater would count as a classic, and you really should list all of this in a quality posting. That’s what almost everyone here is interested in. What it opened as, when it opened, what does it look like (especially since photo submission has been down so long) and any history. Of course the history should continue up to the present, but we need more than one sentence. And if the poster has just presented us with a chain of stunningly dull multiplexes, what are we to think? So do everyone who has never been to Hamilton a favor, and give us some info. And post the Crest if someone hasn’t beaten you to it.

Okay, maybe that was a little rude, but just because you have a good time somewhere really doesn’t make it a treasure in the sense that this site is intended for. I went and saw lots of movies at the Meyer Park 14 in Houston when I was going to high school, but that doesn’t make it any place special. I’d never dare list such a nondescript box on this site. Besides, the impermanent low quality of these buildings means that none of them is likely to last anywhere near as long as your marriage. I’d give most of them 20-30 years tops before they need to be gutted or torn down.

Do you have a daughter named Applebees?

Noticed that the function is incorrectly listed as movies. It appears that the building is still a parking garage, there is a garage style door instead of a lobby. There are also a barber shop and a university office on either side of the door.

Forgot to thank Charles VanBibber for help with the ID on this one.

This isn’t a site to chronicle the economic forces behind the movie theater industry, it’s a site specifically to commemorate classic movie theaters. Even aging these monsters 200 years wouldn’t make them worth anything. If in 40 years people form grassroots movements to protest the demolition of a 16 screen cinderblock and drywall box, I’ll admit I was wrong. No one will ever miss these things. Almost none of them look even like anything, which will make replacing one box with another very easy. The days of quality architecture are mostly over (but may return), and quality construction has been priced out of the reach of all but the best-funded projects for 20 years or more. These are essentially disposable buildings.

Glad someone out there agrees. It seems like lately there have been a lot of these pointless entries cropping up. I would like to see the site administrators winnow out all the garbage, and post some guidelines. I think the vast majority of us agree with at least a general definition of ‘treasure’. I cannot see what possible ‘treasure’ criteria theaters like this meet.

RMI,
Hopefully this will be the last DanBarry ‘treasure’ we get cluttering up the site. What is so nice about these megaplexes that you must submit them all? Corporate sprawl is ugly enough in real life, we don’t need it here. For a cinema to be a treasure, it should be architecturally or historically significant, or at least offer a unique ambiance or selection of films. If your only qualification is that it’s a place that shows movies, I’ll submit my living room, which is a lot nicer than these cruddy boxes some people cram the site with. It even serves beer.

Wow, I’m sure it’s a real gem. Why do we even have dumps like this on the site? It is Cinema Treasures, no? Not ‘A Complete List of Every Theater in the US’. I suspect some of these people are just corporate flacks. If I memorialized every dog turd that cinema chains have dumped on the American landscape, I could have listed thousands. I even go to them, but they are by no means treasures.

Nope, sorry. I was living in San Antonio when I took the trip to Ballinger and points beyond.

Sulphur Springs is the pits. The courthouse is wonderful, but the rest of the town is dingy, ugly, and depressing. I’m glad I didn’t miss a theater, I’d hate to have to go back.

I think the Yahoo map is all screwy. I was trying to figure out where those other two theaters would have been, but I can’t. I have pictures of two unidentified buildings which were on the 1400 and 1500 blocks of what I thought was Main, but may be Cumberland. Either of them could have been a theater, but they probably aren’t since the addresses don’t match.

Sure Don, my email is I can point out a few theaters for you, since I only post those I took pictures of.

Apologies, it is the one on Cumberland. I got the map of town turned around. I’m not sure it’s open. There were no attractions on the board. Guess we know how many screens it has now.

The bombing caught my eye. I figured gangsters or anarchists, given the date, but it seems like it may have been an insurance scam. Here’s the best info I could find.

Across the street and one block down. I think the Garza is next door to an old bank, making it second from the corner. I didn’t bother taking its picture. If you have movies in mind, I don’t think you have any competition. By the way, Tahoka has an old theater that is now offices. I didn’t take a picture when I was there, but I wish I had. I don’t know what it was called.

The local paper in Arlington has an ‘X years ago in history’ feature that mentioned this theater as being in trouble with the Commonwealth for trying to buck the blue laws (re: Sunday movies) in 1936. It was apparently one of the first in VA to try.

Found a picture of it on the web. I must have seen it, but it’s a pretty undistinguished building. Certainly the Tower has aesthetics on its side.
