If anyone would have operated the 10 as a $1 house it probably would have been Cinemark… but they are in the process of getting out of the discount house business.
Its not economically viable with the requirement to go digital in their minds to spend the money to upgrade.
In some small markets Cinemark has fliped a 180 and converted $1 houses to first run with no upgrades, but maintain lower admission prices and run others out of town.
Carmike Sucks.. they run theaters into the ground, and the New theaters don’t stay nice long.. I couldn’t believe how nice some newer theaters are.. for a few months..
Just saw a movie here last week and I was IMPRESSED!! AMC spent some money and retro-fitted the original 8 houses to a stadium tiered seating. They also remodeled the restrooms, concession stands and other deficiencies they have been running for the last 10 yrs at full price.
Now you actually get stadium in all 20 theaters for the same ticket price…
I believe the mall tore it down to build a strip plaza with a Target or other big box store.. I know Teicher did not have an option to renew the lease.
Origionally opened in the Carmike Family, It replaced the 2 screen across town. Fairmount was closed shortly after the 8 screen opened in the Lakesore Mall. In 2002 it was re-opened by N&S theaters and still today splits product with the now ALL DIGITAL Carmike in the mall which received a well needed renovation with new seats and such to keep the edge for booking preferences.
No updates have been made to this theater since it was built, except with the addition of cupholders to the existing 1980’s seats.
guarantee that that Regal put a non compete clause in the closure of this theater, unless they just let the lease expire and the landlord is motivated to fill it.
Second run houses are going to be a thing of the past anyone going in there at this point will have to re-fit the booth again with new equipment and there is no point not going digital, and the cost out weighs the fact there is probably a booking zone issue where they will have to split product and argh as nice as it sounds it is a gut re-hab.
PRO’s it hasn’t been closed long enough to be demolished.
This theater will have leather reclining chairs with ottomans, tables and buttons for table service.. Nothing will be non-digital, and it will truly be classy, BUT WITHOUT the huge classy prices!
He wants to keep it affordable so people will actually come back more than once a year for anniversaries and birthdays. It is themed Tuscany and resembles a village interior, and will have a plaza style bistro seating area.
The 4 smaller houses are seat ready and wired ready to go, one of the large theaters has the steel risers in place waiting for concrete, and the 6th auditorium is being used for storage right now.
about 8-10 weeks out. no info on a website update yet.
Chuck
Spoke with the owner YESTERDAY 8/22/12 and finishings are going on right now, and the seats have been ordered for delivery in the next few weeks.
Other equipment has been in storage for a while now, but the theater is set to open in 8-10 weeks, and events have already been booked for November. The opening will be 4 of the 6 auditoriums and the 2 largest houses will open shortly after.
There will be 2 types of concessions in the lobby where you will order and pick up at a counter at the bar, They will be Mexican and Italian. Then you will have seat service in the auditoriums.
Excitement is in the air, and things are finally at the stage of finishing the details and getting it done at this point!
when this theater was open in the 2000’s it dawned an 40-45 seat screening room with a projector with reel to reel mounted on the wall behind it in the front where the Law offices used to be, and it was tucked behind the concession stand. You walked down a hallway and ran into a 100+ seat theater, and then you went to the right down a narrow hall to the final theater which featured the original screen on the back wall. Instead of splitting this theater down the center it was split in the front and back.
Restrooms were in the basement, and were often cleaned with a garden hose, and people complained constantly about film pacement and cleanlieness..
at one time it was showing .99 movies on weekends only and finally closed for good, which is odd because i believed the building was actually owned by Tiecher, his son lived in the apartment above,
The map location shows this theater in Troy, when in fact it replaced the mall 6 screen and was built on the rear access road across the interstate in Piqua. The mall theater is still there with one auditorium intact for hotel meeting space.
It had been hoped that a retailer like Old Navy would fill this space but with ½ the mall empty it is unlikely this will happen.
the only reason it probably stays open is it is owned and operated by the management company leasing the property.. Probably an effort to make enough to pay the property taxes on the land. I am supprised that anyone re-opened that theater after 11 years being closed anyway..
It was definatly unique with the elevated booth and view of projection from the lobby, but at best it has always been a lackluster operation.
This theater in the 90’s had been added to from the original twin at the end of the strip plaza. They went down and took the whole plaza moved the lobby, and left the twinned shoebox cinema at the end of the hall.
At this time it was owned by a private owner who also rented the downtown twin that was trippled with a TINY screening room which may have been turned back into a cafe. I remember seeing the Flintstones move here, 2 people in a huge auditorium, and the next weekend the owners were locked out, and the theater was closed. because they stopped paying their bills along with the rent. This was in 93-94.
Well I don’t believe it, but late 2011 this theater went 1st run again with a matinee price of $3 and evening $6 with NO UPGRADES.. Do I see it closing again when the problem of a digital upgrade LOOMS?!
Nick I actually talked with the new manager after the holidays, and he said that they are priority 1: Going 100% Digital, Priority 2:Stadium Seating in phases, and developing the lower level into either an arcade or bowling alley..
But the Digital upgrade was coming by May 2012.
FYI
Otherwize they inherited the headache of noone caring at regal because they were closing anyway. I guess there were several equipment issues, and major projection problems. I guess there was actually complete prints left on platters and in cans when they opened it up too.. so if this tells you what kind of mood Regal was in when they moved out I don’t know what will.
Mike, Frank bought the whole Sunrise chain and got all their debt and rediculous lease agreements and couldn’t wait to close the under performers that were so far in debt noone wanted them.
Chuck, Teicher closed the cinema because the mall had found a tennant willing to lease the building for more rent per square foot. Teicher went on to re-open a UA 10 in Palm Bay Florida. It is a 10 screen Dollar house in the middle of at least 4 newer 1st run venues.
I believe that anything salvagable has been removed, The owner put a new roof on several years ago, and painted the exterior, but I saw a hole in the side wall last month and a bobcat parked outside with debris waiting for a dumpster. If anyone really wanted to they could build a 10 screen in the old Kmart Plaza across from the Ruskin Drive in.
www.ruskinfamilydrivein.com is the official website. The last 35mm print was John Carter, then they re-opened the following friday in Digital..
Its been a while since we have been to the ruskin, now that the baby is 9 moths old we might try getting out there as it is only 10 min from our house.
I’m definatly looking forward to a brighter picure it was really hard watching Harry Potter on the screen with so many dark scenes!
This theater was built on the cheap. I was a manager for another chain nearby when this was built and only managed to enjoy the lobby carpeting with the film reels and the fact they once sold Pepsi.
The theaters were shoebox, with what looked like shower curtains hanging on the paper thin drywall walls. The projection was dim and not fit to the 12' screens which were wall to wall with no masking. The sound was pushed out to hopefully be louder than the theater next door.
I forsee the building becoming a health club when 35mm is no longer available, as they built this location LITERALLY 1500 ft across the parking lot from the once National Amusements Huber Heights theater, that has been continually upgraded and digitized by Rave Motion pictures.
Was by this theater a few weeks ago, which has changed names due to a copyright issue, and there seems to be forward progress.
It looks like they have re-done the drywall, and they were pouring concrete for the stadium seating, it also looked like they were working on the front of the building.
I have emailed the owner but did not get a responce as to a new opening date, but I WOULD ASSUME that they will bust a$$ to get it open by Memorial Day, which is obtainable if the issues have been resolved and they are in a forward motion!
The last time I was buy there in 2010 the landlord walked me thru.. it is pretty rough inside. Nothing exists as a theater except the walls dividing the auditoriums. The landlord said all the AC’s and Roof were operating and good condition, but they were looking to possibly sell the property to a church if it was not wanted as a theater.
There is an AMC 8 and a REGAL 8 within Miles from this location, and a SUNSTAR 8 at the Seminole mall, and the only megaplex is the REGAL PARK PLACE 16 formarly RC PARKSIDE 16.
Is this theater still standing? I know the landlord attempted to operate it for a brief time.
I am suprised that someone hasn’t opened a 6-8 plex in the Arcadia/Wachula area… closest cinema is Sebring over 40 min away.
I think it was Starnet Theaters

This theater formerly run by slumlord CARMIKE CINEMAS has been thru a top to bottom rip it out and put in new GUT REHAB!
It boasts 8 new Stadium Seating, Digital projection houses.
Gone the dirty smelly carpet stained with drink syrup, and poor projection quality.
Well worth the try… its not your old place anymore

Did they strip and demolish this theater? did someone open across the street that was all stadium?
