Screens at the Continent

The 4-screens Continent Cinemas opened on December 19, 1975. It was operated by Mid-States Theatres. By 1991 it had been expanded to 9-screens and was operated by Loews. Loew’s Continent 9 Theatres closed on July 1, 1999. The Continent one of the first movie theaters in Columbus to offer more than two screens under one roof.

A pair of Atlanta movie-theater operators who grew up in Upper Arlington reopened Continent as an eight-screen cinema-restaurant called Cinema Grill at Continent 8 on April 7th 2004.

Cinema Grill at Continent 8 was not even open and plans were the works for a second location Cinema Grill at Consumer Square 14, that being a closed Regal Theatre.

After only 5 weeks the Cinema Grill at Continent closed on May 14, 2004. The Screens at the Continent as it later called now was operated by Realty Finance Management a subsidiary of Apollo Management LP. It was closed in late October-2021.

Ron N., according to their website they are running current sub-run releases. (4/2/2012)

I was at this theatre some time ago on a Saturday evening and it was absolutely empty except for the special event I was attending. I’m really surprised that it stays open.

the only reason it probably stays open is it is owned and operated by the management company leasing the property.. Probably an effort to make enough to pay the property taxes on the land. I am supprised that anyone re-opened that theater after 11 years being closed anyway.. It was definatly unique with the elevated booth and view of projection from the lobby, but at best it has always been a lackluster operation.

Theatre website indicates that 4 of the 8 screens now have digital projection.

The CONTINENT was where I saw RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK I think. They gave away a special small magazine like thing.

Drove by a few weeks ago. Doesn’t appear to be open. A shame. I saw ET there in the early 80’s.
