New theater in Sandusky, OH opens in November; two others to close

SANDUSKY, OH – Cinemark plans to open its new twelve-screen theater behind the Sandusky Mall on November 19 while closing its older theater, the Cinemark Movies 10, on Route 250. Carmike, which also planned to build a new Sandusky area theater, has cancelled those plans and will close its Plaza 8 near the mall on November 14. The story is in the Sandusky Register.

I always thought Sandusky was over screened, perhaps not in the summer time with Cedar Point down the road. I had visited a few summers ago, both theaters were decent. I know the Carmike that’s about to close is all digital.
I do think if someone were to pick up the old Movies 10 it could work as a discount operation. I believe there is also a few drive ins near by, and a couple of big Regals in the vicinity.
The last drive-in in Sandusky proper closed nearly a decade ago; one remains near Norwalk. The nearest Regal operation is in Elyria, so, as far as I can tell, as of the end of November, this new Carmike theater will be the only one in or really near Sandusky. The classic State Theatre downtown, screens a classic film now and then.

If anyone would have operated the 10 as a $1 house it probably would have been Cinemark… but they are in the process of getting out of the discount house business.
Its not economically viable with the requirement to go digital in their minds to spend the money to upgrade.
In some small markets Cinemark has fliped a 180 and converted $1 houses to first run with no upgrades, but maintain lower admission prices and run others out of town.
