Here’s an update the Pemberton Mall Cinema reopened back in November with a startup cinema called Wilcox Theatres based out of Bastrup,La. The ceo put in state of the art equipment which includes digital sound and digital picture. The startup also did a complete renovation which the old cinema needed. But there are those of us who wondering how long can this new startup remain open. Especially with compitiion from Madison,Ridgeland,Flowood with there larger cinemas. And Tinseltown in Pearl which is stadium cinema.
Joy Theatre,Vicksburg Ms. It had an art deco theme for a single screen cinema. Sometime in the seventies at the old battlefield mall here in Vicksburg a four screen cinema came which is now torn down came into being.
I saw 2001 when I was 8 yrs old at the old Joy Theatre which was torned down twenty years ago. When I got older I saw 2001 once again when I was in junior high school when it was released. Being eight then I can tell you the music scared me then but now I enjoy watching more and more; I suggest u buy the 2 disc version dvd for the documentries are wonderful watch.
I loved the cinematography of the Dark Knight as well. Like the night shots of Chicago and the night Sky Hook scene in Hong Kong.
I believe those of the Academy should ask themselves how come thier ratings are so low every year.
What surprised me about this year nominations was the fact that the Dark Knight got snubbed. Heath Ledger deserved to be treated better for his bravado perfomance as the Joker. The academy always go for films that public doesn’t get a chance to see becouse of limited release or the cinema doesn’t even bring it into that marketplace at all.
I remember this film. Seems so long ago. This was Natalie Woods last film. Becouse before or after this film release she died in a boating accident. I was in college when it was released.
I learned that four screen and one screen cinemas aren’t as profitable as they once were. I wonder how many mall cinemas have fallen or met the axe since the rise of stadium cinemas in the marketplace.
This summer I had the oppertunity experince digital cinemas. First at the Rave Motion Picture stadium cinema,Destin,Florida. Just this weekend at the Malco 17 in Madison. I saw Wanted in Destin and the experince blew me away. The picture is sharp and clear. With sound u can even hear background sounds depending where u sit.
I saw the Dark Knight in digital picture with Digital Dolby sound.Like WANTED the experince was fantastic. I sat close to the front and Dolby digital is real quality sound. One thing the films didn’t break like some would with tradtional movie projectors. What gets me is that cinema operators are hostile still with with this new technology.
Since it’s still summer could this switch from Fridays to Wednesday is an effort to increase box office draw. I notice with some of the blockbusters that they get releaserd earlier than your traditional release dates.
Now that was an interesting article. When Regel Entertainment and Village Entertainment groups ran the now closed Pemberton 4,the cinema managers were hardly around. Also they didn’t seem to take market studies to see what films they’re audiences would like see.
It has been two years since the old mall cinema four screen multiplex Pemberton Cineama 4,and CBL Associates which closed the cinema becouse of a feud with the tenant hasn’t found a tenant for the thier high rent property. At the sametime there is a rumor circulating that the small mall could be closing. But CBL’s own inactions toward the other tenants in the mall has generated some worries. Renee Williams the mall propertier has been quiet as a church mouse.
I heard that the box office revenues have climbed up too. U know recently I did a Google search on cinema closing and I found some more going on in Northeast. Like a multiplex owned by National Amusements has closed in Amity,CT. I like the fact that Sheri Redstone criticized her competitors in the industry and most of those cinama chains like Cinmark,Regel Entertainment Group are here in the southeast and Southwest. I figure when a cinema closes I factor in box office losses with it. I maybe wrong on that. But that’s how try to see the big picture.
One thing I did learn about Regel Entertainment Group. They went bankrupt in the early 00s. Once I read about it in Wikipedia it all made sence becouse of the selling of the local cinema to Village Entertainment. Now why Regel sell to such disrepectable owner? Especially one that’s bad apple. Listen in a Google search college students who once worked with Village Entertainment are speaking out on how bad that company is.
Excellent point on that one. Cinemas will actually become thing of the past especially when techology is involved. Now we can dowmload films on our flat computer monitors. Next thing u might have Direct Tv make the same offer by passing the pay per view.It does reveal a weakness of Tinsletown that they’re not up to speed with techonogies.
Over years what has turned some off some of the viewing public is the fact that some actors used thier speeches to address thier politics. Which cause some to loose out at the box office. Even away from the oscars when actors speak publicly on thier politics,it backfired at the box office.
I learned over the weekend that the Screen Actors Guild contracts are up for negations this summer. And its over the same issues that was addressed in Writers Guild Strike.
Now I watch the oscars off and on. What made it interesting this year they were trying to heal over the fact of the Writer’s Strike. Back in January the Writer’s Strike cancelled the Golden Globes. But the writer’s got thier point across. Even ABC was low key in advertisting the oscars telecast. Beside the oscars being low in the neilsons,so was the Barbara Walter’s Special prior to the telecast.
Now the criticism against the Motion Picture Academy is the fact that most of the Oscar nominated films aren’t seen by most of the movie going public. Becouse of limited releases in metromarkets and distrubtion issues, PR issues most of the films that were nominated like Antonement aren’t seen. And another fact I learned that some cinemas often scheldule like one showtime. Which hurts the film at box office.
I like the fact it’s called a fake popularity contest. But the criticism on the films not being seen is growing.
As for me I was at the University of Southern Miss in Hattiesburg not far from the campus. We didn’t talk about it much. But since I was studying film at the time I was looking at technique and editing. I saw Threads and Testament a year later. I recently watch Threads on Youtube and Threads still had the more impact. I’m surprised it hasn’t been released in the states on dvd. Testament with Jane Alexander took a more intimate look after the nuclear bomb. Especially how Jane and her son and his friend face death.
I know what you mean. The dream sequence from Termanitor2 was one of the best I’ve seen. But that scene got toppled with Independence Day when the city saucers destroyed the cities with one laser shot.
I saw that tv movie when I was in college. I watch the entire film and at the time I found it provocative. I had to get out of my apartment and walk in the cold for a while to ease my mind. Here’s another film along those same lines: Threads. It’s a BBC film that came out a year later over here. I watched the Day After again on Sci-FI and if you compare both films u would find similarites. But the British film Threads even covers life in post nuclear age in the United Kingdom. By the way I read the Wikipedia background on both films.
But the Day After made me think. But 9/11/01 made this movie look pale by today’s standards.
TheatreBuff that is amazing that a cinema house like that has survivred in downtown Philadelphia. Down here most of the cinemas that were built in Vicksburg ms were destroyed like the Stranger theatre in downtown Vicksburg back during the ‘53 December tornado. Or the Deco Style Joy Theatre,a single screem cimema torned down for development in the '80s.
What has been interesting downhere is this: a lot of high end cinemas have turned Vicksburg. Their arguement is not enough population. It really irked some local leaders too. Just thought I pass that as an fyi.

Yes, the type nuke you’re referring too is a suitcase nuke. HBO did a documentry about them a few years ago.
