I found reference of a Gem Theatre that was opened on New Haven Avenue in 1914 by J.B. Johnston, and was sold in 1916 to former first Melbourne Mayor Charles John Frazier Campbell. It was still in existence in 1924, the date of a photo I saved from the Melbourne & Melhi Memories-Melbourne Florida Facebook page. I’m looking for confirmation that it ever showed films, before I add a page for it to CT. Please respond back here if anyone finds anything further.

This unfortunate update was in the CT News Forum, but somehow didn’t make it to this page.

The Gar Wah was open at least into 1988, as I saw both “Robocop” and “Action Jackson” there. The latter was released February 12, 1988, and it was not first run at the Gar Wah.

“Beau Geste” was released September 7, 1966. So likely first run and before `67.

1982 photo added credit John P. Keating Jr., that shows the parking structure continued to stand operational after the demolition of the Shangri-La in 1981. Additional parking was created were it had stood as well. So the subsequent demolition of the parking structure and hotel development happened later.
