uh-oh…maybe I’ll go to a clearview in parsippany or succasunna!!! This isn’t the first time that a major theater chain has refused to show movies in its entire circuit. Back in 1999, most of Loews Cineplex’s theaters in Manhattan refused to carry “Star Wars: Phantom Menace”, then two years later, all Regal theaters refused to carry “Rush Hour 2”. As for my moviegoing experience at amc, i just came back from watching “Valentine’s Day” this past sunday while it was crowded, mostly for Shutter Island since it was sold out. I waited a few mintues to get a box of chocolate raisins and a large Coke Zero. It was a good deal. Projection was so-so and there were splices.

advance tickets are not available yet for alice in wonderland, which opens in two weeks. Hopefully by next week AMC will post advanced showtimes for the movie.

bad news, respite was cancelled, so I’ll be seeing shutter island with my dad tomorrow night in 35mm at rockaway. This will be the third Scorsese movie that will play at this theater, following The Departed after its Oscar run and Shine a Light. Bringing Out the Dead last played at the old AMC in Rockaway.

moviebuff82 commented about Regal Times Square on Feb 18, 2010 at 12:28 pm

Last year was the 10th anniversary of this theater, which was the first 10+ screen theater in Times Square. Several months later, AMC opened their 25 screen behemoth and shared movies with its smaller theaters, the State and Astor, which competed against the struggling Criterion, right across the street from MTV’s TRL set (which is gone). Things have changed since then. Which theater was the first in Times Square to show digital projection, Empire or Ewalk?

Seeing pixels on screen during a movie is like watching scratches on a bad IMAX print as was the case with my second showing of L5 at Lincoln Square. Sound was still working and 3D was good, but there was some splices and scratches (which were small and tiny on a large screen). This also is true for older IMAX movies like To Fly and Omnimax movies where the screen envelopes the moviegoer.

Two months from now will be the theater’s 10th anniversary. Many things have changed, such as Digital IMAX, 3D, and older movie theaters closed. It still is the busiest theater in America and has the most screens of any theater in New York City. No wonder I avoid going to Times Square at any time!!!

Seems that this theater is showing some interesting films from asia…this is something Rockaway might look at in the future….when will 3d be installed at this theater? This theater is big enough for a digital IMAX to be installed at the biggest screen.

A year and half later, several AMCs in the NYC area got Digital IMAX theaters.

Imax digital is the new coke of Hollywood. Once it fails soon, then AMC will gut those screens and add real imax screens!!!

Seems that Clearview is responding to the digital revolution by installing more projectors in its other theaters, including older ones. That means no more sharp prints of movies as well as good old lossy digital sound that will be quieter with the pcm audio. Too bad they don’t have the money to afford an Imax installation, which AMC, Regal, and Cinemark have.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Jersey Gardens 20 on Feb 18, 2010 at 11:50 am

speaking of facebook, jersey gardens has its own page….facebook.com/jerseygardens. I first noticed it when I was browsing through Lucky magazine. Back when Jersey Gardens 20 opened, there were two theaters in Newark. Now there’s one owned independently and thriving in inner Newark. The thing I like about this theater is the outside, which hasn’t changed since AMC took over in 2006. Also, how large is the mini-Imax at Jersey Gardens?

are they showing any olympic events on the big screen there? Maybe AMC should do something like that for the next olympics, which will begin by the time the entire AMC chain of existing theaters will have 4k projection (and when NBC is wholly owned by Comcast, whose Universal movie studio will still show movies). Also, 2012 is when Paramount turns 100, so hopefully a new logo will come out for that studio. I remember when Loews changed their name to Sony, they had Sony Playstations at the lobby and Sony tvs showing stuff. Most of Sony’s movies played there, and they had the short lived SDDS sound system.

i might go to this theater next week on my respite at the homewood suites hotel, which is south of the theater on Commerce Drive. Maybe I’ll see either Avatar in Imax 3d (in its second to last week) or another movie in 35mm. It will be sad when the other 13 projectors won’t show film by 2012. When I watch a digital movie, I miss those splices, specks of black, the brown code that’s used to protect those who record a movie on their cellphones, the blurry projection, and the once every 20 minutes cigarette burn that lets projectionists change reels. I first learned about it in “Fight Club”.

moviebuff82 commented about IMAX will expand into AMC theaters on Feb 17, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Well it’s been awhile…but the effort has paid off….since the imax-amc deal, amc has made a profit from the imax and 3d theaters, and will continue to retrofit screens as imax screens. Other chains are doing the same thing. Too bad Clearview can’t do imax because most of their screens are small!!!

BTW, advance sales for “Alice In Wonderland” (all three versions) will be online starting Friday. The film’s budget is a tad bit higher than “Avatar” (at $250 million). I wonder if Sony will install more projectors if “Avatar” is still popular to make room for “Alice” in 3D, which might get two more screens as well as the “IMAX” version. Maybe AMC could do nightly showings of “Avatar” to put in alongside “Alice 3D”, and mix and match different showtimes for several movies, ala the IMAX at Lincoln Square.
