How many performing arts venues can LI sustain? You have the Patchogue, Westhampton Beach, Engelmann(at Northport), CM (at Oakdale), Smithtown, Paramount (at Huntington)soon to be Westbury and Suffolk (Riverhead), all former theatres PLUS Bay Street in Sag Harbor and a myriad of others.
Photo in the heading is actually of the East Hampton Cinema which was built on the same site after the Edwards was destroyed by fire. There is a linked photo of the Edwards in the comments area.
Question to FatMan, above. You mention the Kinema and Cityline. Don’t find Cityline on CT. Perhaps it’s there under another name and no cross reference was provided?
I was never in the Bellaire but the exterior certainly looked “itchy”. I remember hearing stories about how the Bellaire would have water on the floor after a rain. I found it really odd when it was converted into a two level bowling alley. The lower one must have really flooded. I was in the Hollis once, see an earlier posting. I found the surroundings pleasant even though the projectionist on that day was totally incompetent missing cues, cursing loudly at his own frustrations, etc..
As a sometimes visitor of Toronto, is there some “local” about the shape of the marquee – I’m thinking the Capitol, Bloor and the other one on Bloor now retail.
Originated as Westhampton. Original marquee still used. WHBPAC created after UA dropped it from the roster. Purchased for a relatively small sum, under $250,000, I believe. A lot of $$ into the restoration and expansion of the facility. A jewel.
The address is wrong in that it is the one for the now defunct (but maybe reopening) Soundview Cinemas. The old Sands Point occupied pretty much the same site but the Market Place address was not in effect at that time.
The owners of the Suffolk have been granted tax abatements for ten years to help defray the several million dollar renovation cost of the premises. Work is being delayed by additional work so the targeted opening of December 2012 may be pushed to the spring of 2013.
As you can see from the “in course of demo” picture the theatre was fairly large; very long. I don’t recall a balcony. That wasn’t common place in an AIT venue.
Always the possibility of a post office reassignment. Case in point, the Bellerose used to be in Bellerose before the small Nassau County strip in which it was located was reassigned to Floral Park. As far as the ribbon is concerned Ken explained sometime back that the ribbon was established when the theatre was added to CT and cannot be changed.
Must be the case with the Shore in Huntington. They should spend a couple of bucks ‘cause you drive right past it at night since is no marquee. Will all the changes of ownership they should just put up the theatre names.
And what happened to those masks? A number of the later, smaller shopping center theatres had them. If I remember correctly, the Glen Oaks, York and Whitman for sure. Don’t remember the Morton Village and was never in the Park East or Five Towns.
Remember being able to see a bit of the marquee from the LIRR train each day (also could see the back of and a bit of the marquee of the then Austin from the same vantage point.
I just checked back. I see no duplicate listing for this theatre. At one time there was a Continental a short distance away from this now known as the Brandon Cinemas.
Tinseltoes. Obviously you didn’t read the comment the webmaster, Ken Roe, addressed to you, in part, on the Community Twin site. The top ribbon was created at the time the theatre was entered on CT from sources which may not have been correct. There is no way of making the correction. So there is no point in reporting this problem on a theatre by theatre basis.
Maybe the name should be changed to Former Cinema Treasures since more than 2/3 of the entries are no longer functioning in that capacity and a goodly portion of those have been demolished or are just slowly crumbling, with some help from the locals.
And per my comment on the Jackson this is an ongoing problem. And just look at the nearby theatres listed.
The Cameo was on Steinway Street in Astoria!!!
Don’t depend on nearby theatres to be correct. I’ve complained about this before. What’s even wilder is when it says there are NO theatres and more than a half dozen exist. They have made attempt to fix this nor have they responded to my several comment to the webmaster.
Amazing that the area can support a single screen theatre of this size.

I saw her appear in Let it Ride on Broadway. Also it’s interesting to note that she is buried in Farmingdale, as are a number of other celebrities.
