  • Cinema 4 in Newport shuttered

NEWPORT, TN — The Newport Cinema 4 was closed as of January 7. The only operating cinema in Cocke County, the theater opened in in the mid-1990’s and was once operated by the O'Neil theater chain. The owners are hoping that a new operator can be found.

In Hooper’s opinion, the cinema closed after facing several different obstacles. He said the theater’s overhead kept getting more expensive. The economy impacted ticket sales. He also believes more stockholders were needed in the beginning. But overall, Judge Hooper feels the theater reached its goal of entertaining the community.

New theater opens in Wagner, SD

WAGNER, SD — The last time Wagner had an operating movie theater, “Jaws” was the featured first-run attraction. Now a new Wagner Theater has opened, co-owned by two couples who converted a former hardware and outdoor equipment store by performing much of the work themselves. The new single screen theater has stadium seating, digital projection and surround sound.

Cerny praised the initiative shown in starting the theater, given that a previous volunteer effort failed. He anticipated the new theater will draw customers from as far as Fairfax and northern Nebraska towns such as Spencer.

“This one will give a much needed amenity to people in town here,” Cerny said. “I think people in the area are kind of hungry for a theater. … It took a lot of hard work and a lot of risk to do this venture.”

  • Dinner theaters becoming more prevalent

An article in theWall Street Journal discusses trends in new theaters, specifically the wider range of food offerings.

Under pressure from viewers as well as movie-industry executives, the country’s theater chains are trying to win back moviegoers—with food. Audiences at a growing number of theaters can order such dishes as chinois chicken salad rolls or limoncello-tossed shrimp. More middle-of-the-road fare is also available, like cheeseburgers and chicken caesar salads. Seats in these so-called “in-theater dining” cinemas are big and plush. Lobbies are luxurious, with art on the walls and mood lighting. Popcorn is often complimentary and a full bar is de rigueur.

  • Does anyone know of a company that restores old theater seats?

EAST GREENWICH, RI — I am on the Board of Directors for the Greenwich Odeum. We are in the process of trying to re-open the Odeum, but need some help with our seats. We are trying to see if they (metal with fabric/padded seats) can be salvaged, and therefore we need to find a company that reupholsters old theater seats.

    Thanks!

How Coronado’s Village Theatre is being saved

CORONADO, CA — The previously announced renovations of the Village Theatre are finally getting under way as this piece discusses the city’s relationship with this classic gem of a theater.

Older residents long for the “pre-bridge,” small-town character of Coronado and many new residents come because they like what’s still left of that atmosphere, said former Mayor Tom Smisek, who was involved in the early restoration talks.

“People can walk or ride their bikes anywhere,” Smisek said. “That wide landscaped median strip down Orange Avenue may not be the best way to move traffic, but it keeps that area nice. We have the overall ambiance of a little town, and our little theater kind of fits with what we’re trying to keep here.”
