The Rialto: A Fading Treasure
SOUTH PASADENA, CA — A student from South Pasadena High School could have created a documentary on anything but chose to highlight the state of the Rialto Theatre. Following up on the history and the future of the theatre has become a passion for her and the film was presented at a town meeting the other week.

Manville brothers cross the 1,000 mark
MANVILLE, NJ — A touching story from My Central Jersey talks about two brothers who recently experienced their thousandth movie together in one theater. It goes through the ups and downs of their lives since the theater opened in 1999 and how seeing films reinforced their bond.

The Colonial Theatre presents its sixth Spooktacular
KEENE, NH — It’s that time of year again with the Colonial Theatre presenting its annual Spooktacular. “Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man” will be the showcase event but there will be plenty more including vintage trailers and prize giveaways. Curated by the New Hampshire horror TV show, Saturday Fright Special, it will be the first time they screen a classic Universal monster film as part of the series.

Cottage View Drive-In owner unsure of theater’s future
COTTAGE GROVE, MN — The Cottage View Drive-In has had many close calls before but this past summer might finally have been its last. Developers have been talking for a while about new uses for the land but filling the vacant spaces in town continues to be a higher priority.

Garden Theatre releases 2011-12 schedule
WINTER GARDEN, FL — The Garden Theatre, 160 W. Plant Street, is pleased to announce its 2011-12 live performance schedule. The professional productions are “Little Shop of Horrors” (Oct. 14-Nov. 6), “Sleeping Beauty Ballet” (Nov. 12-13), “The Diviners” (Dec. 2-18), “Best of Battle” (Jan 27-29), “The Bikinis” (Feb. 10-26), and “The Foreigner” (Mar. 16-Apr. 1).
The annual community production is “The Music Man”, and it will play April 20-May 27. Many musical performances are added during the season, including during Winter Garden’s Music Fest, Oct. 7-9.

The Paramount Theatre brings “The African Queen” to the big screen
KANKAKEE, IL — The Daily Journal is sponsoring a Classic Film Series at the Paramount Theatre, at 213 North Schuyler Avenue, in honor of the theatre’s 80th anniversary. The series will take place at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month in October, November and December. The first film to be presented is “The African Queen” (1951) on October 13th, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.
“The African Queen” takes place in Africa during WWI and tells the story of a riverboat owner/captain who is persuaded by a strait-laced missionary to use his boat to attack an enemy warship.
Each screening of the series is free to subscribers of The Daily Journal with a limit of up to four passes per subscribing household. Passes for these movies will be available to subscribers at The Daily Journal offices in Manteno, Bourbonnais, Kankakee and Watseka two weeks prior to each showing. Non-subscribers will be admitted at the door for $5 per person.

HTC Meeting 11/15 at the New Beverly
LOS ANGELES, CA — For many years, the Los Angeles Conservancy has had a volunteer committee specifically dedicated to raising awareness for historic theaters all over the county. Its subcommittee plans the popular film series, Last Remaining Seats, and its other endeavors include an oral history project, L.A. theater database project and various other preservation-related initiatives.
Each quarter they meet, preferably at a historic theater, with the next meeting scheduled for next Saturday, October 15th at 10AM at the New Beverly Cinema. All are welcome to come meet other theater enthusiasts and discuss other future projects.

Uline Arena could become a movie theater
WASHINGTON, DC — A space with plenty of history behind it could become a movie theater. The Uline Arena has served as a concert venue and most recently a parking lot and could be converted to revitalize the area.
