Fulton Cinema moves to 8-screen building
FULTON, MO — B&B Theatres is shutting its doors on the historic downtown building and moving to a new 8-screen cinema on the south end of town in May, 2006.
The old building is currently only 2 screens. The main auditorium is located downstairs, and a steep set of stairs leads to the smaller upstairs auditorium, a renovated balcony.
“Having only two auditoriums limits the movies we can show,” says current Fulton Cinema employee Alex Dzurick. “We always have to keep a family-friendly show in, and we don’t always get the newest releases.”
The B&B Theatres chain has owned the building since 1980, and it is currently the only theatre in the city.
“I grew up in the old place,” says Dzurick. “My mom worked there before I did, and I spent my toddler years under the counter reading while she ran the box office. It’s going to be hard to leave, but it will sure be nice to have more screens.”
The new building will be an 8-screen complex, all on the same level. Some current employees are helping to build the new building, but not Dzurick.
“I’m not old enough to work in construction,” he says. At 16, Dzurick is the youngest employee at the Fulton Cinema. “It’s hard being the new kid, but a lot of them knew me before I got the job. I even work with some of my teachers and siblings of classmates.”
The project is slated for completion in May, and the theatre hopes to open for business mid-month. The old building is being turned over to the Fulton Fine Arts Council, and it will be renovated into a live stage for community productions. The upper floor and screen will be removed and the upstairs will become a balcony again. The marquee will be removed and projectors taken out.
But there will always be the faint, lingering smell of hot buttered popcorn.

Marquee Theater in Springfield, MA Closes
SPRINGFIELD, MA — The former Regal Cinemas is now closed. What happened? Someone buy this awesome theater and reopen it for me. :) I loved catching the 12 noon show for $5 and being the only one there. But maybe that’s why they are closed.

Oceanside Twin Closed For Good?
LONG ISLAND, NY — Just before Thanksgiving, a fire was intentionally set to an old abandoned supermarket. The building burned down. Unfortunately, this building was connected the the Oceanside Twin movie theater.
The theater itself sustained no fire damage. It did however sustain heavy smoke and water damage. But the main damage was done by the fire department ripping the ceilings and walls open.
The theater is currently closed. All indications from the ownwers are that the theater will never re-open.
Long Island loses another of it’s oldtime movie houses.

The Sun is Setting on the Columbia Drive-In
COLUMBIA, PA — The theater lights at the Columbia Drive-In will go out for the last time after Sunday night’s shows at Columbia Drive-In, according to Lancaster Online.
The theater, which is being sold to make way for houses and stores, will end a nearly-50-year run this weekend with a triple feature, including a showing of “ Witness.”

Lafayette’s Park Theatre Closing
LAFAYETTE, CA — The owners of the Park Theatre announced yesterday that the single screen cinema would close after business concludes Sunday 9/18/05.
Renaissance Rialto had operated the theater for over 15 years with good success. However, in recent years, the times have changed and attendance appears to have had dropped off.
They will run the Park’s three most popular films during the theater’s final weekend for just $5.00 per person.

New Movie Theater In NYC?
NEW YORK, NY — A new high-tech-style movie theater may anchor the southeast corner of Washington and 13th Streets/the Meat Packing district in the future, according to this report from the Villager.
The building, located at 837-843 Washington Street, is currently a low-rise building brokered by James Ortenzio, homoe to many meat businesses. When the building is refurbished, Robert K. Futterman and Associates, a national movie theater chain will take the 2nd and 3rd floors once the ground floor has something. The building is 60,000 square feet.
The current leases expire in 2 ½ years.

Mann Closes Valley West?
TARZANA, CA — I noticed that Mann closed it’s Valley West 9 plex in Tarzana. I’m not quite sure why, unless the valuable property it was on was sold. It was the only theatre in Tarzana and I would imagine it was profitable. The Valley West was taken over by Mann in 1982 after being a 2nd run 6-Plex named Theeeee Movies of Tarzana. They always showed double features of 2nd run films and would often move titles around and pair with new titles. Mann later added 3 screens and showed first run fare.
