Lakewood Theatre and Historic Landmark Status - Dallas TX.

Our Friends in Dallas are working to gain historic landmark status for the iconic Lakewood Theatre. Have you worked on a similar project? Please share you experiences gaining historic landmark status and how your community works with building owners and concerned citizens.
“Katherine Seale, Mayor Mike Rawlings’ appointee to the Landmark Commission and the former executive director of Preservation Dallas, who yesterday sent a letter to the city’s historic preservation staff initiating historic designation proceedings for the Lakewood.
Landmark won’t actually get to the Lakewood until its September 8 meeting. But Seale’s letter will serve to “tap the brakes,” as she put it on, on any significant construction at the Lakewood. And it means that Kinney and his partners can’t file a demolition permit in the meantime.
Sending the letter to Dallas City Hall was “the reasonable response given that Preservation Dallas’ phone calls and emails to the property owners had not been returned about trying to meet and discuss parking solutions.“ – Dallas Morning News

Thanks for posting info about this great Dallas Theatre. I hope some day THS does a conclave visit in the Dallas area. Many movie theatre treasures surround the Dallas area both open and closed. THS seems to keep on going back over and over to the same cities all the time. Please bring on some new places to look at like Dallas Texas!!!!!
Wearing my “Save the Lakewood” shirt, I have gotten all kinds of stories from people who love this theater and are either in anger or disbelief that it could get demolished. I have heard from old-timers that they would get to see film footage of news (like our efforts in WW2)during an age when they only had newspapers and radio. That the theater even helped to sell bonds to help our nation/troops in the WW2 effort. This theater has a very rich history and should be preserved. Please enjoy the photo I am posting from 2002.
