“Remember when movies used to promise a thrill a minute? Well, RAIDERS nearly doubles that ratio. It makes you feel like you’re beating the speed limit just sitting still.” — Michael Sragow, Rolling Stone
TRIVIA & FACTOIDS
Promotional slogans used for the RAIDERS release included: “Indiana Jones—the new hero from the creators of JAWS and STAR WARS” and “The creators of JAWS and STAR WARS now bring you the Ultimate Hero in the Ultimate Adventure.”
RAIDERS spawned two sequels, a prequel, a prequel television series, a theme park attraction, video games, and countless imitations.
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ART was Mad Magazine’s spoofy take on RAIDERS.
RAIDERS includes stock footage from LOST HORIZON (1973) and THE HINDENBURG (1975).
The longest theatrical engagement of RAIDERS is believed to have been an 81-week run in San Jose (25 weeks at the Century 21 followed by a 56-week moveover run at the Century 25). The longest, continuous engagement in a single-screen theater is believed to have been a 58-week run at the Cinema Grossmont in the San Diego suburb of La Mesa.
RAIDERS won four Academy Awards: Film Editing, Art Direction, Sound, and Visual Effects, plus a special achievement award for Sound Effects Editing. The film was also nominated in the categories of Picture, Director, Original Score, and Cinematography. Other awards RAIDERS received included Favorite Motion Picture (People’s Choice Award), Golden Reel (Motion Picture Sound Editors), Best Fantasy Film (Saturn), Best Edited Feature Film (ACE Eddie), Best Production Design/Art Direction (BAFTA), Best Film Music (BAFTA), Best Album of Original Score written for a Motion Picture or Television special (Grammy), Best Dramatic Presentation (Hugo).
By the close of its theatrical release, RAIDERS had become the highest-grossing film in the history of Paramount Pictures. It held that distinction until being dethroned in 1994 by FORREST GUMP.
Two original documentaries on RAIDERS were produced: THE MAKING OF RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (for public television) and GREAT MOVIE STUNTS: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (for network television).
RAIDERS was test-screened on May 9, 1981, at the Northpoint Theatre in San Francisco.
Paramount’s originally-scheduled release date for RAIDERS was June 19, 1981. Shortly before release, so as not to compete during opening weekend with SUPERMAN II and THE CANNONBALL RUN, the studio moved up the release by one week where instead the competition was CLASH OF THE TITANS and HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART I.
RAIDERS was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1981.
RAIDERS was screened as a sneak preview in selected markets one week before release.
RAIDERS was released to the home video market in December 1983, thirty months after initial theatrical release.
RAIDERS had its cable television premiere broadcasts during November 1984.
RAIDERS had its network television premiere broadcast (on ABC) on September 28, 1986.
RAIDERS was the first home video release to sell over one million units. The Beta and VHS editions retailed for the then-low price of $39.95.
RAIDERS was Steven Spielberg’s fifth collaboration with composer John Williams and third with editor Michael Kahn. Williams and Kahn have worked on the majority of Spielberg’s projects.
Richard Amsel, famous for his numerous TV Guide covers, was the artist who painted the artwork used on the film’s promotional material.
RAIDERS was re-released during the summer of 1982 and spring of 1983. The re-release was promoted as “The Return of the Great Adventure.”
The idea for RAIDERS was told by George Lucas to Steven Spielberg on a beach in Hawaii during a May 1977 vacation following the completion and release of Lucas’s STAR WARS and the completion of principal photography of Spielberg’s CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND.
RAIDERS was filmed in 73 days, fifteen days ahead of schedule. Principal photography commenced on June 23, 1980, in La Rochelle, France. Several weeks of studio work was done at EMI Elstree in London. This was followed by a month of shooting in Tunisia before wrapping on October 3, 1980, in Kauai, Hawaii. Although not counted on the official principal photography schedule, the production also included several days of second unit work. Visual effects were produced at Industrial Light & Magic in Marin County, California. In addition, there were a couple of days of additional photography, in January 1981, in San Francisco and Stockton, California.
Indiana was the name of one of George Lucas’s pet dogs.
Tom Selleck was originally cast in the role of Indiana Jones, but a commitment to CBS for the MAGNUM, P.I. television series prevented him from accepting the role. Shortly after Harrison Ford was cast and production began, a Writers Guild strike delayed the production of network television shows, a break which, ironically, would have enabled Selleck to have done RAIDERS. Selleck later would do a RAIDERS-esque episode of MAGNUM, P.I. as well as the similar adventure film HIGH ROAD TO CHINA (1983)
The STAR WARS connections are endless: The canyon where Indy threatens to blow up the Ark and subsequently surrenders to Belloq and the Nazis was the same Tunisia location where R2-D2 was captured by the jawas. Numerous crew members worked on both productions. As a joke, images of STAR WARS characters R2-D2 and C-3PO were included among the hieroglyphics in the Well of the Souls set. The registration letters on Jock’s plane were OB-CPO (as in Obi-Wan Kenobi and C-3PO). And, in addition to Harrison Ford, STAR WARS actor William Hootkins (Porkins) appeared in RAIDERS (as Major Eaton).
The classic “Wilhelm” scream sound effect can be heard during the truck chase sequence.
The submarine featured in RAIDERS was used in DAS BOOT (full scale) and Spielberg’s 1941 (miniature model).
Actors Vic Tablian and Pat Roach each had a dual role in RAIDERS. Tablian played the Peruvian porter Barranca as well as the Monkey Man who attempts to poison Indy and Sallah. Roach played the Giant Sherpa in the Nepal sequence and the German mechanic Indy fights near the Flying Wing.
In 1989, the leather jacket and fedora worn by Harrison Ford were donated to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
RAIDERS in 1999 was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Another amazing research job, Michael!
I saw “Raiders of the Lost Ark” when it first came out, and afew times afterwards, when it was out of date. It’s a well-done (if intense) movie, which is also rightly considered a classic, even though it admittedly does not hold the same special, sacred place in my heart regarding movies as “West Side Story”.
Fantastic job, as always. And congratulations to one of the more delightful films ever.
This is an amazing compilation of information. I knew you worked on the project extensively, Michael, but all of this is beyond impressive. Thanks.
Great job, Mike. Thanks for the hat-tip!
Another outstanding piece of research from the Coate Man.
Great job Mike, but is no one else bothered by the fact that the site’s new formatting makes this next to impossible to read? It looks like code from The Matrix. I know Mike didn’t work as hard as he did and create this to look the way it does. So why does it… look the way it does?
Hmmmmm, feel free to correct me but wasn’t the SRO Montclair Triplex(California)engagement in 70mm? I could have sworn that’s how i saw it.
Cliffs — What browser and computer are you using?
And, again, Michael, Herculean work on this. Definitely worth tweeting about again today.
Nice job Michael! I first saw “Raiders..” at the midnight show on opened night at the Mann’s National Theatre in Westwood. It’s was presented in 70MM 6-Track Dolby Stereo and Boy did that room Rock that night. Over the next two years I saw the film at Pacific’s Cinerama Dome, Pacific’s Picwood, Mann’s Bruin, Mann’s Fox, Mann’s Hollywood and GCC’s Avco Center, all in 70MM. It opened at the Mann’s National in June and played till Oct and came back for a short time in Nov that year. Boy, that was a Great time for Blockbusters in Westwood!!
And I saw it the next day at Mann’s Chinese Theatre too. The presentations at the National and Chinese were both outstanding in 70MM! i forgot to put the Chinese in the last post above.
I was working at the Village Westwood at the time, a bunch of us got in openening night to see it at the National @ whatever showtime was within the 10:00 hour. It was a great time in Westwood.
Ok – Patrick fixed the formatting of the post.
As always, great job Michael! And now that Patrick has fixed the formatting it looks much better and so much easier to read.
Raiders opened at the Varsity 6 and Hillsboro 3 in Tampa (35mm Dolby in both venues.) I saw the film at both theatres and what a fantastic ride it was!
This is my all time favorite “Going To The Movies” story.
I saw Raiders on “accident” at the Esquire 4 in Clayton (St. Louis), MO. It was playing in the #4 house, a stand alone theatre with tons of seats and a massive screen.
Here’s the thing: we had actually gone there to see another movie but it was sold out. So my mother suggested that we check out “Raiders Of The Lost Ark.” I said, “I dunno…I guess so. OK.” My mom paid our money. We walk into the theatre right at the scene in Marion’s bar (we’d missed the famous boulder sequence).
Roughly an hour and a half later, our jaws hit the floor. We were stunned and amazed at the brilliance we had just seen! We cheered when Indy shot that swordsman. We felt his pain when seeing those snakes surrounding the ark. We were shocked to see the glory of God instantly melting and exploding all those henchmen. “Raiders” instantly became one of my mom’s all time favorite movies to this day!
And we saw it by accident…LOL!
First film I saw three times in a theater, not counting a 1999 midnight show of a faded print at the old Kentucky Oaks, a much better 2001 screening at the independent Maiden Alley in Paducah and countless other times on cable and video. Never fails to entertain or amuse. One of the greats.
They just don’t (and apparently can’t) make movies like this anymore. (See Indy 4 for proof.)
It was another “little film” that Weis Cinemas got and we Didn’t.And we had the Better Twin theatre, not that it matters.
I remember seeing this movie as a sneak preview in Manhattan either at the Loews State or the RKO National, don’t remember which one. What was weird to me about the preview was that it was shown with a film that opened the same day in that theater. The regular film was “Sea Wolves” starring Gregory Peck, Roger Moore and David Niven. So you got 2 for the price of one, many people just sitting through “Sea Wolves” to see the first Spielberg/Lucas collaboration. I had never seen and I believe I have not seen since a sneak preview with an opening day film on the same screen. This is back when sneak previews in New York were shown on Fridays. Now the rare preview appears to be only on Saturdays.
You stole my memory, DARCYDT! Except I saw the sneak preview at the Sunrise Cinemas in Valley Stream. I don’t know how well you remember “Sea Wolves,” but I recall that it was a particularly dull geriatric action flick that practically put my friends and I to sleep. We literally knew NOTHING about “Raiders of the Lost Ark” – just interested to see how Spielberg was going to bounce back from “1941” ( which I really enjoyed, regardless of its flaws and the critical drubbing). Anyway, the point is we had NO IDEA what to expect from “Raiders” – not even much of an idea as to what it would be about – so you can imagine how completely blown away we were by the movie! It was a particularly jolting experience in the wake of the stultifying “Sea Wolves” that preceded it. I went back to see it again a couple of times during its initial 70mm engagement at the Sunrise and have viewed it from time to time on DVD and, while the movie still works beautifully for me and holds up to repeat viewings, nothing will ever replicate that first “blind” sneak preview viewing in the late spring of 1981.
THANK YOU! Great job, however the La Mirada California theatre was a 70mm presentation. Saw “Raiders” opening day at the National Theatre in Westwood California. Will see it for the I-don’t-know-how-many time this Friday at the screening at The Acadamy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Can’t wait!
For me, Raiders was one of those rare chances to see a movie without any hype or expectations. I had seen it on the Paramount release schedule listed in the chart at the back of the Boxoffice magazine, but in those days of limited previews and no internet, I knew nothing about it. I was working at the Lenox Square Theatre at the time and at 10 AM on Tuesday 5/19/81 we hosted the southeast regional bid screening. We ran a lot of those and most were of scant interest to me or the bookers and there was seldom more than half a dozen present. On this day a much larger crowd showed up and I decided to watch some of it although my main interest was making it across the street to Phipps Plaza that night to see an advance screening of Outland. By the time the opening sequence was over I was hooked and poor Outland never did have a chance.
We ran the 6/5 advance preview to a sold out house and opened it on 6/12 to overwhelming business. Lenox, which had once been a great place to see a movie was by now a pathetic venue with long, thin, auditoriums, keystoned projection, postage stamp screens, seats not pointed towards the screen, and hollow sound. Raiders at least opened in the only Dolby house which really only added volume since the house was too narrow for proper balance. Three weeks later it did not even have that since it moved to a mono house to make way for For Your Eyes Only. However, Atlanta audiences never seemed to care about presentation any more than the theatre owners did, and Raiders did huge business, as did Bond, Clash of the Titans, and Eye of the Needle.
Raiders lasted until Christmas then left to make way for Sharkeys Machine. By February, it was in the dollar houses although Phipps Plaza brought it back for its first 70MM Atlanta engagement. Although it may be damming it with faint praise, Phipps did have the best presentation in Atlanta, and one of the very few 70MM houses. Regardless, I finally got to see it the way so many people in these comments have described it, and it was a real treat. In July, the Fox Theatre brought it back as part of their summer film series, and again in March of 1983 for a five day engagement, all in 70MM. Huge crowds for both engagements. In 1996 I was working in the booth at the Fox and ran Raiders as the middle feature of our well attended Spielberg day of Jaws, Raiders, and CE3K.
I don’t have an all time Top Ten. I doubt that Raiders would be in it if I did, but I have always enjoyed watching it, and that day in May of 1981 when I saw it with absolutely no preconceptions will always go down as one of my most memorable movie going experiences.
DARCYDT, The “Raiders..” sneak preview was held at the Loews State Theatre in Times Square on June 5th. 1981 in 70MM.
I was a teenager when Raiders opened on June 12th 1981. I worked at the Eglinton Theatre in mid-town Toronto – a large, beautiful single screen art deco cinema with a huge screen that is now an “event venue” (at least it didn’t meet the wrecking ball). We had a 70MM print with an incredible blasting soundtrack (even by today’s standards, it’s still a great sound mix) and ran five shows a day until Labour Day (first week of September in Canada) then we went to four shows a day until we opened “Reds” in early December of ‘81. There were no doors on the auditorium so no matter where we were we could hear the soundtrack and we all got to know every line in that movie. I could put on the DVD and still recite every line to this day! Raiders is still one of the great action-adventure films of our time, and after working hundreds and hundreds of screenings, I still like the damn thing! I also remember that we used to have fun when it first opened looking for “mistakes” like continuity errors and such, we found a couple of dozen!
Raiders brings back such great memories of working at the Eglinton Theatre in the early 80’s and that time of my life.
The Summer of 1981….. “RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK”,was the overall boxoffice champ that summer. You had also another boxoffice draw that summer of 1981 with………… “CLASH OF THE TITANS”,“SUPERMAN II”,“ARTHUR”, “FOR YOUR EYES ONLY”,“HISTORY OF THE WORLD:PART ONE”, and the Bill Murray comedy “STRIPES”.
I was a teenager in 1981 when RAIDERS opened on June 12,1981. But I got the chance to see it during a bargain matinee at Durham’s Northgate Twin Theatre. Capacity crowds and every seat was filled during the screening of the matinee show. I was blown away!!! My cousin at the time wanted to see Gary Coleman’s 1981 flop “On The Right Track”,which played on Screen Two. But when it came to RAIDERS,it brought in more crowds at the Northgate than any movie ever!!! When the show was over, and before we got outside…the lines were snaked around the cinema and around the other side of mall. The lines went to one section of the Northgate Mall,to the side of Sears' Department Store. And this was during the matinee!!!! Never seen anything liked it. The last time I saw lines that went out the door and circled the mall were during the screenings of…. “THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES”,“SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER”, “SUPERMAN:THE MOVIE”,“E.T.”,“STAR TREK II”,“SCARFACE”, “BACK TO THE FUTURE”,and “RAMBO:FIRST BLOOD PART II” all of these movies played at the Northgate Twin Theatres in Durham.
Most exciting 8-minutes – before the film titles – that I’ve ever seen. It was all uphill from there. A classic film that I’ve never gotten tired of, over all these years.
New 40th anniversary retrospective!
