Orchard Theatre in Port Orchard closes

PORT ORCHARD, WA — In 2007, The former Plaza Twin Theatre here reopened as the Historic Orchard Theatre but disappointing financial returns caused the current owner, Far Away Entertainment, to close the theater on December 30, 2010. The company may be open to a sale of the theater.

“With a major first-run, multi-screen theater nearby, we felt that a more adult-oriented independent and art film concept was worth trying,” he said. “It’s been difficult to attract this audience segment on a consistent basis, especially in the evening hours.”

As in all of its theaters, Far Away hosted numerous community and non-profit events in Port Orchard for local charities and civic organizations.

There is more in the Port Orchard Independent.

And so another small theater sadly licks its wounds and bows to the almighty multiplex giants.
It was regret that I went to the pathetically attended last show. I had just moved to Port Orchard and was pleased to find such a nice place which offered the types of films I enjoy.
Their projection was excellent along with comfortable seats in a clean and heated auditorium… and the yummy popcorn was fresh and hot too!

Mr. Yeung…
Why don’t you PAY to advertise in the proper journals and NOT use the FREE space on this wonderful VOLUNTEER, NON-PROFIT website!!!

Better still, send Cinema Treasures a cash DONATION… HUH?

Good News for Port Orchard fans of film!

The theater is reopening under new management. See their new and evolving website at http://dragonflycinema.com/

There was a town hall gathering of interested patrons on May 1st which brought out about 80 folks to discuss the future of the theater with its new owner. There is an Kitsap Sun article on that meeting here: http://bit.ly/l30foX

HURRAY!!! Like a phoenix rising from the dust… or more like a DRAGONFLY rising from the pond, This 90+ year old theater is coming back!

From what I’ve heard, there is a HUGE social aspect to theater-going which is sorely lacking from the megaplexes… the patrons of the Dragonfly Cinema will keep it going this time!
