Old Polk Theater Might Be Bought and Renovated

Columbia, Tennessee – The Polk Theater

The Maury County Arts Guild plans to buy and renovate the landmark Polk Theater in Columbia.

Members of the MCAG took the first step towards acquiring the building on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, by signing a real estate agreement to assume the $260,000 loan that current owner Rick Alexander has with First Farmers and Merchants Bank.

The MCAG now needs to round up enough money to show the bank they’ll be able to take over the loan. The committee has sent out letters to 300 prospective donors and hopes to hold a series of fundraisers and write grants. The building will be restored/renovated for a downtown theater and cultural arts center.

The theater was built in 1948. It’s been dormant for some 30 years.

(If interested in donating to this project, contact Susan Manning at or send donations to Polk Theater and Cultural Arts Committee, P.O. Box 676, Columbia, TN 38402.)
