LOS ANGELES – Leonard Maltin has a nice post on his blog, Leonard Maltin’s Movie Crazy, about the Los Angeles Conservancy’s always terrific “Last Remaining Seats” series. Here’s a sample:
There is no thrill to compare with seeing a classic movie in a great movie theater. For twenty-four years, the Los Angeles Conservancy has hosted a month-long series called Last Remaining Seats, showing vintage films in the city’s great movie palaces, most of which are located on Broadway downtown…. If you’ve never been to these great movie palaces and plan to visit Los Angeles any time soon, you should sign up for the Conservancy’s Saturday morning walking tour. Or mark your calendars for next June and join the fun.

I’ve been on several Los Angeles Conservancy movie palace tours and they are great. I’ve taken friends from out of state on these tours and everyone always enjoy it. The most comments I get from them are that the theatres are much bigger and more lavish than they had imagined. Afterwards I would take my friends over to Broadway’s Clifton’s Cafeteria for lunch.
Clifton’s Cafeteria is more a local landmark on Broadway. Many of us have stopped by for a quick bite over the years.

Thank goodness L.A. did put high rises up at the expense of an old theatre, like so many cities have and now regret.
what screw up,i meant “DID NOT” need to slow down!
I’ve attended the Conservancy’s “Last Remaining Seats” program every June since 1995. Always a great show and I’ve seem some great programs over the years like when Stanley Kramer came out to be interviewed and introduce his film “Guess Who’s Comiing to Dinner” or when both Mel Brooks and Cloris Leachman were on hand to introduce “Young Frankenstein.” It’s always a great time at the Last Remaining Seats and supports the good work the Los Angeles Conservancy does in helping to save these historic theaters and other buildings in and around Los Angeles. We are very lucky to have these theaters extant when so many have fallen over the years. A big shout out to Clifton’s Cafeteria – another of Los Angeles historical gems! Try their Mac & Cheese – Huell Howser loves it!
