According to Entertainment Weekly 20th Century Fox will re-release “Avatar”, the highest grossing movie of all time unadjusted for inflation, in an extended version that will have 8 more minutes of action and sfx scenes set in Pandora. The film will play exclusively in digital 3D and IMAX 3D theaters on August 27 in select theaters.

Do they give out awards for the Greatest-Waste-of-Time-and-Money-on-a-movie-that’s-already-been-on-screen-and-DVD????
Gimme a f*ckin' break!!!
It makes sense in markets like Manhattan where there is only one first-run real IMAX and “AVATAR” was pulled prematurely for “ALICE IN WONDERLAND” from several key 3D runs.
OOOH! 8 whole more minutes of action and sfx scenes! I can hardly wait…NOT! Are they going to add an extra $3.50 surcharge for those 8 minutes on top of the 3D and IMAX surcharges? Call me when there is another re-release of “Lawrence of Arabia” in 70mm or better yet “How the West Was Won” in three strip Cinerama!
Any re-release to theatres is a good thing. Even Avatar.
Hopefully it will make lots of money and Hollywood will dig deeper for other re-releases.
Hopefully some of them will be available in 2D.
:)
ugh and I thought Lucas loved flogging his dead horse – hand it to Cameron.
Yes, indeed; you can bet that 20th Century-Fox and Cameron will milk this cash cow dry and follow the path blazed by Lucas (and even Spielberg on occasion) – I expect that in the years to come, we will see “Avatar – the Special Edition” and “Avatar – the Director’s Cut”.
Any re-release is a good thing? Hmm. Perhaps we could talk Hollywood into re-releasing “Plan 9 from Outer Space,” “Battlefield Earth,”“Gigli,” and “Can’t Stop the Music.”
Or do IMAX re-releases of stuff like “Logan’s Run”, “Pink Floyd: The Wall”, “Jaws”, “RoboCop”, etc… This way, you introduce modern audiences to the stories without a pointless remake.
I’m all for an “Avatar” re-release, but I wish they had more than 8 minutes of footage.
JAWS in Imax? Now, that I’d love to see.
Re-releases generally do not do well in today’s market! With rare exceptions (and this MIGHT be one of them) once it’s out on DVD films have limited appeal to today’s young audiences who are only interested in seeing the latest blockbusters, the ones that they have been bombarded with hype and TV advertising for! Even with IMAX and 3-D I don’t think this re-release will be around very long. Of course I also could be wrong!
then again anybody remember THE PASSION RECUT …… (insert random crazy Mel Gibson-ism here)
is there a list of which ‘select’ theatres are showing this on the 27th??
Bunch des émotions agréables et de meilleur casino travail ne sont pas!
I saw this on the XD screen at Cinemark’s Egyptian and I was kind of surprised that it was presented in 2.35 and not 1.78 – oh well whatever. I thought the stampede scene was quite cool in 3D
