Avatar might be rereleased this fall in a longer version

According to USA Today, James Cameron in an interview with the newspaper said that this fall his highest grossing movie ever, Avatar, might return in 3D in an extended version.

Q: When is Avatar coming out in 3D on Blu-ray?

A: We’re not officially announcing it right now but I’m hoping for fall. The wildcard is that we might be re-releasing the movie this fall. It’s kind of gotten stomped out (in theaters) because of Alice in Wonderland. The word we’re getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result. The question is the appetite still going to be there after the summer glut of movies. We’re going to assess that. We’re talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative.

I wonder when it will again be possible for anyone, anywhere, in any context, to say or type the word “Avatar” … WITHOUT following or preceding it with “the highest grossing movie ever” … whether it is or isn’t.

Well, one can’t argue the fact that Avatar has indeed taken in more money than any other motion picture ever made. On the other hand, it hasn’t been seen by nearly as many people as David O. Selznick’s masterwork: Gone With the Wind. The really astounding fact is that it’s still the all-time champ after all these many years.

Hmm, they want to “something creative”? How about transplanting in a story with some real originality or at a least semblance of that? I do credit the dazzling special effects and steps forward in 3D, but extra footage alone wouldn’t make me see it again.

How about 2D and 40 minutes shorter? I can’t imagine what you would ad to the story that could pull it out of it’s ass dragging slow pace.
