Nearly forgotten former Rita Theater in S.F. demolished

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — These days, even the thought of demolishing a theater in San Francisco usually attracts some notice (although the attention only rarely has resulted in real preservation). But earlier this month the former Rita Theater was torn down for condos with little outcry. The theater, built as the Searchlight for silent movies in 1916 at Church and 28th Street, had had a number of name changes over the years. Since 1965, the building had served as a church, painted a bright blue.
