Mystery theater in Denver

posted by lisabwp on June 3, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I am looking for information on a movie theater in Denver, CO. I believe it was called the Federal Theater and went out of business within the last few years. It was located on the corner of Federal and 38th street in North Denver. I can’t seem to find any information on its operation when it was open or its closing, or whether it is salvageable.

I have checked local newspapers, real estate companies, and talked to locals with no luck. Any info on the current selling/renting of the property would be great.

Thanks

Both Mike Rivest’s listings for Denver and its entry on CinemaTour show to have been at 3830 Federal. There’s a picture of it on the CinemaTour site that says it was taken in 2006. Rivest information indicates a closing year of 1975.

The Federal Theatre was located at 3830 Federal Blvd., it was listed as seating 805 people in 1955. The chain operating it in 1955 was Civic Theatres, Inc.. They operated in Denver: Holiday Granada, Oriental, Coronet, Lakeshore Drive-In. It’s also listed in 1933 with 804 seats.

This website contains a 2006 article about Denver’s lost and decaying movie theaters; it includes some history about the Federal:

Last time I drove by, maybe 1999, it was a carpet store. I had heard tales of restoration.

Regarding the Fedral theatre Q that lisabwp listed in June 2008 the Federal at 38th and Federal currently as of today July 21 2008 has both a for sale and for rent signs in the windows on the doors. It is empty and looking beat-up. I’m not sure if G. Sager still owns it??? Are you interested in getting a group togehter to invest and purchase the Theatre? If so let me know.
