As many of you know, Stan Winston, one of the fathers of pre-CGI special effects, passed away yesterday of cancer. He was 62 years old. His legacy, however, will live on in the studio he helped create for which many sfx movies were made. May Stan Winston Studio live on in the CGI era with its famous makeup effects.

Even though I often speak out against today’s movies that are infected with nothing but CGI and no story, I have to say that Stan Winston will be missed. Movies like THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS and JURASSIC PARK would not exist without him. R.I.P., Stan.
I wouldn’t say Winston was one of the “fathers of pre-CGI spfx” but that he was one of the masters of animatronic and mechanical fx. He will be missed. I wonder what his passing will do to the production of the current Terminator movie.
check out the wiki for mr. winston. He leaves behind a studio that will still work, just like after jim henson’s death that his company still worked.
Certainly, without Willis O'Brien, there never would have been a Stan Winston.
Ironic that this should come at a time when the Poll discussed Batman and his villains. Stan was a large part of the success of Danny Devito as THE PENGUIN and Michelle Pfeiffer as CATWOMAN , and very responsible for the look of Gotham City in BATMAN RETURNS. Personally, since I was a kid, I went crazy over movies with dinosaurs. Though I prefer the simpler storylines of fifties sci-fi, JURASSIC PARK made me feel as if I had,at last, really met dinosaurs!
Shock! Stan was always a great inspiration to me as a VFX artist and lover of Horror/Sci-Fi/etc. films. Sad to see him go, he will be missed indeed!
Stan will be missed, he brought many of my favorite screen characters to life like Terminator, the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. He had his hand in many of my favorite films growing up, and it’s sad to hear the creator of many of the best creature effects is gone.
We should also add Mr. Winston’s recent and extremely talented work in IRON MAN… and who knows what else?
