Old Toronto movie houses

posted by Gerrit on May 1, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Hi Everyone:

I became a member not only because I love old movie houses, but I’m in search of a name of one I used to frequent when I was living in Toronto. I would go there almost every evening and watch two old black and whites for a couple of dollars. You know the drill; “Double Indemnity,” “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.” I saw so many old flicks that it became a large part of my youth and life.

Could any of you buffs possess the ability or knowledge which movie house this was? I used to go there between 1970 and 1974.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Respectfully CC

Seems that some of my post has dissapeared, the Movie House was in the neighbourhood, of College and Spadina.

I would check microfilm of the newspaper at the library for movie adds and listings.

Could it be the Garden Theatre-526 seats (290 College St.) or the Village Theatre-822 seats (422 Spadina Ave.)?

Hi Vic and William, thanks for your response, Vic can’t check the newspapers, I live in Amsterdam, and William, I’ll certainly look into those two. I was thinking of the Royal Cinema myself on 608 College Str. within walking distance of Oxford Street. Bit difficult not being able to walk through the neighbourhood. Thankyou both for your time.
