New theater may revitalize mall

CHEHALIS, WA — The 10-screen Midway Cinema opened last weekend, selling about 600 tickets in its first six hours of operation.

The Lewis County Mall is hoping the theater will revitalize business and bring in new tenants to fill several vacant storefronts.

Built inside a former Rite Aid Pharmacy, the theater features all digital projection and surround sound in auditoriums ranging in size from 80 to 203 stadium-style seats.

The general manager of the cinema pointed out that movies are stored on a hard drive loaded into a central server which is then sent electronically to the proper projector.

And in this ‘rural’ farming community this theater charges $9.50 admission vs much less at the existing theaters. Ten screens at this theater in addition to five screens at three other existing theaters is too many for that market.

Usually the theatre becomes a drug store, not the other way around! Must have been a big Rite Aid.

I agree with Ken and I’m not sure the digital technology will be enought to draw and make the place successful. Regarding the drug store to theatre thing Coming Attractions Theatres put an 8 screener in a former Thrifty Drug Store building in Crescent City, California (on the coast just below the Oregon boarder).
