CinemaTour.com visiting Long Island 9/27-9/30

posted by Scott Neff on September 24, 2007 at 11:00 am

Adam Martin & Scott Neff from CinemaTour.com will be driving around Long Island this coming Thursday through Sunday to take photos of as many theatres and cinemas as possible.

At this time it appears that the majority of the trip will be spent taking exterior photos, which while interesting, is not as exciting as seeing photos of actual auditoriums, lobbies and projection rooms. If you or somebody you know has access to the interiors of ANY theatres, please contact to discuss setting up a window so they could stop by and capture the theatre’s history.

This request is for any and all theatres on Long Island, and we’ll drive to the surrounding areas if it means getting detailed photos of anything about to close or be demolished.

Since we are from the West Coast, please comment/e-mail concerning locations that are a must see, or are themselves in danger of closing or being demolished. We don’t want to travel across the country and wind up missing the last opportunity to take the only photographs that may publicly exist of these beautiful (and sometimes not so beautiful) venues.

Although I’m happy to say that they are not yet in danger of closing, I proudly recommend the HAMPTON ARTS THEATRE in Westhampton Beach and MONTAUK THE MOVIE in Montauk!

The Long Island folks reading this and are asked to make visitor arrangements, could just take photos themselves, and upload them to Flickr for all of us to enjoy. Don’t forget to send the link here!

Well that’s always been an option, but sometimes people never take the time to take pictures of the theatres in their own backyard, whether it’s time constraints or technological constraints. That’s where we can help.

And how many times have you clicked one of those photobucket or flickr links, eager to see what picture is on the other end, only to get an error message?

Orlando Lopes is the person on long island (that still lives there)who knows more about EVERY theater on Long Island….You would do well by talking with him….

Scott… I maintain a Photobucket album where I’ve housed hundreds of photos of theatres in Queens and Nassau Counties (and elsewhere in the NYC area) that I’ve taken myself over the last couple of years. You are welcome to peruse those images and copy any files that you wish to use on your site. My albums are arranged by County or Borough and then by theatre. If you find the images to your liking, it might eliminate some legwork on your part and allow you to cover theatres that have not been well documented.

All I ask is that you give me proper photo credit if you elect to use any of my photos. It should be easy to distinguish those photos that I actually took myself as opposed to older photos that I copied form other sites. I always date my own photos with comments indicating month and year taken. If you wish to contact me privately with any questions, please feel free to do so at .

In any event – have a great time! Happy hunting and good luck!

I have from time to time been known to take pictures of the theatres without the management knowing about it. I’ll do that when I absolutely hafta gotta needta have pictures of a place, but I prefer to be able to setup a tripod and take some good steady un-blurry shots.

I’ve also taken detailed pictures inside various chain theatres that friend of mine have worked at. The photos aren’t published for the public to view at Cinema Tour since their corporate offices might be upset about it, but should the theatre ever close, we’ll be able to have record of what it looked like.

Oh and Ed — thanks for the permission for your photobucket pictures. We’ll be sure to give you proper credit when we get a chance to post them up on Cinematour.
