HOUSTON, TX — Sadly the AMC Meyer Park 16 of has been closed. The building has been gutted & parts distributed to the other theatres in the chain. The building still stands so hopefully one day someone will make something of it. It was one of the original megaplexes in the Houston market; but with the recent decline in the surrounding neighborhoods AMC decided not to renew its lease on the 20 year old building.

A closed 16-plex. Is this the largest complex ever to close?

The next largest I can think of is are the AMC Burbank 14 and Century 14 in California. But really those theatres were replaced with newer stadium theatres in the saame shopping complexes.

The Loews 20 North Versailles in Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh closed a few years ago, not long after opening. It’s listed here on Cinema Treasures.

Speaking of box cinema trends, the former cinema operators Regel Entertainment and Village Entertainment never went out to scout for property fot give Vicksburg a new cinema. In Clinton,Madison,Ridgeland and Pearl they got the newer cinemas. As a result the viewer in the Jackson metro market had more choices. Where is the locals here had thier choices narrowed. Both chains never went out to build a new box cinema; as a result the teen market moved out of this market and into the Madison,Pearl,Clinton markets. Now what chased away the local teen market? Two factors I believe: limited choices. Black films got held over more than several months times not allowing new releases;crime happening in the cinema as well. And the owners letting the property fall into deteraitiion. Crime in Pemberton Mall has been one major issue that CBL has to deal with. I wouldn’t be surprise if mall owners are shocked that there having a real hard time finding a new operator to fill that space. On the old Cinema 4 box office I saw FOR SALE on it.
One more fact the Mayor bragged after the cineam closed that his town would have cinema by summer. And nothing hasn’t transpired and the anger hasn’t gone away.
