Information on value of 1936 fight 35 mm film

posted by auctions43 on November 5, 2007 at 10:35 am

I recently bought 3 reels in original wooden shipping boxes of the joe Louis vs. Max Schmelling fight in 1936 at Yankee Stadium in New York. The fight went 12 rounds and Schmelling won. They are in great condition. I am trying to find out what these reels are worth.

Thanks for any information,
Gary

First of all, this film may be VERY flammable and hazardous Nitrate stock, so keep it in a cool dry place OUT OF THE HOUSE.
(look at the sides of the film next to the sprocket holes—-the word NITRATE should be printed every foot or so)

This footage may exist elsewhere, so it may not be worth a whole lot, but the people over at www.35mmforum.com can give you an idea.

The big problem is—even if you sell it, most shipping services will not ship nitrate-based film due to its flammability, so do some research as to whether UPS or FedEx has a class of service for it.

True this footage may exist elsewhere, but perhaps this footage is in better shape or has different shots or better sound then what’s out there. Might be worth checking with the film archives at UCLA too.

Wow….considering there were several newsreel cameras set up for the fight that night…..you might have a unique item there. While it is true that much footage of this great fight exists, you may have a previously unseen vantage point. And not to mention the importance of that fight in pugilistic history!!!
Of course, be carfull with Nitrate film, it IS rather explosive.
