Los Angeles theaters: Broadway and Eighth

posted by TDavis on October 19, 2007 at 9:36 am

Does anyone know which theater sat on the NORTH side of 8th Street in Los Angeles during World War 2? A photograph shows something called the Newsreel Theater but does not indicate if it was owned by any theater chain of the time period. I know that the location was NOT the Tower Theater (also at Broadway and 8th.)

The website does not show this theater in its main index of newsreel theaters.

Many thanks.

The name Newsreel was on three threatres on Broadway during the 40’s and 50’s. First was the Palace (Orpheum)at 630 S. Broadway), then the Globe (Morosco,President) at 744 S.Broadway and lastly the Tower at 802 S. Broadway. The only theatre on the north side of 8th St. would have been the Olympic (Bards) at 313 W. 8th St. I do not know of it ever being a Newsreel theatre.

During the 1940’s the Globe Theatre was known as the Newsreel Theatre which is a few stores north of 8th. Street and Broadway. During this time the theatre was part of the Principal Theaters Corp. of America chain. They operated the Palace, Newsreel, Tower Orpheum and Rialto Theatres on Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles.

And the seat capacity listed for the Newsreel Theatre during that time was 1177 seats.
