NORTHAMPTON, MA — The Pleasant Street Theater is slated to close soon as the new owner has no intentions to maintain its business.
The Pleasant Street Theater, Northampton’s last remaining venue for first-run movies, will show its last film sometime within the next two months and close its doors, its owner said today.
Robert Lawton, who owns the business with his wife Julie, said he is in the process of selling the building at 27 Pleasant Street that houses two small theaters. Lawton declined to say who is buying the building but said the new owner does not intend to get into the movie business.
“He would be happy to have a movie theater there, but he doesn’t want to run it himself,” Lawton said.

Won’t that leave Northampton with no movie theatres at all, only live stages?
That is correct Ron. The Calvin has been live performance only for a number of years. And the new plans for the Academy of Music don’t seem to include film at all, only live shows.
This is really too bad. I am surprised that a great town like Northampton cannot support a movie theater!
The Amherst Cinema Arts Center in nearby Amherst shows the same type of films as the Pleasant Street. It re-opened last year after being shut for a very long time. It has three screens. Amherst is not really walking distance from Northampton but it is a short drive.
And the public transit is great and the bike path goes directly there. But still, it’s known for being a college town and most of its foot traffic are students and passersby. I’m glad I got to go there once.
